Re: custom low carb diet
If you created a custom plan, wouldn't it be based on your own resistance and response?
Have you attempted to follow Atkins or any other low carb plans yet?Last edited by dotsamantha; August 19, 2006, 07:28 AM.

Hi Giovani! I think I recognise you from another lowcarb boardOriginally posted by giovannip811can i do my own low carb custom diet without a book? and if i can. how many carbs do i eat a day?
Welcome to our ADBB family
Here we are all following the advice and instructions given in Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution published 2002 (DANDR 2002), so most of the advice and comments members here will give you will be based on that book.
To answer your question, yes of course you can do your own lowcarb custom 'diet' but unless you thoroughly understand the theory behind lowcarbing you will probably not be as successful as if you follow one plan to the letter.
And as Dotsamantha said, you would need to base it on your own body's response to following one specific plan for a while, so you knew how your body responds to certain foods and quantities.
Seems much harder and more complicated to me than choosing a plan and following it 'by the book'
What sort of eating regime are you doing at present?Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: custom low carb diet
Sure! But you would have to figure out what carb level is good for your body. The best way to do that would be to start out at about 20 carbs for 2 weeks to get your body ready and then every week add 5 grams of carbs of a certain food group until your body started gaining and then drop back down...NO..WAIT...that is Atkins!!!
I highly recommend buying the book...don't be cheap...it is a small investment for your health. Read it...follow it...read it again. In the book it tells you how to find your carb level. It helps you find out what foods your body reacts to. It truly is a way to get to know your body well. The book costs under $10 bucks...surely you are worth that!!! In the meantime read all the stickies at the beginning of each of the forums and you will get a good overview of what we do here at this board.
Best of luck in whatever you choose to do.Elsie150

Re: custom low carb diet
We recommend that you do this diet by-the-book as it's the fastest and healthiest means of losing weight. I would suggest that you do it and after 6 months or so, reevaluate how much you have lost and how much more you want to lose and then, with a good understanding of why and how this plan works, you can adjust it to your own likes and dislikes.Originally posted by giovannip811can i do my own low carb custom diet without a book? and if i can. how many carbs do i eat a day?
A few things that don't work are low-fat, low-carb diets.
Not eating any carbs at all
Eating junk food low carb products, etc.
Stick with us kiddo and you will be healthy, wealthy and wise.

Re: custom low carb diet
Hi - Some years ago, I had a professional trainer who devised his own low-carb regimen. I exercised & lifted to beat the band...and it did have some effect for a while. I then tried my own "Atkins-like" diet. It went down & up nowhere.Originally posted by giovannip811can i do my own low carb custom diet without a book? and if i can. how many carbs do i eat a day?
I finally sat down AND READ THE BOOk and lost 100+lbs. While I've given a little of that back and am trying to work it off - I'm still a devotee. Without the book to guide me, I never really had an ingrained philosophy of how to eat. I found that I needed that in order to make the snap-choices we make all the time when we're out to eat, running late for a meeting, or passing the bread aisle in the supermarket.
After I read DANDR, I came to realie that my nutrioinal understanding was muddled. I thought I understood things, but didnt.
Spend the $4, buy the book, READ the book, and try it the good Drs. way.
Best of Luck!!

Re: custom low carb diet
The only thing I forgot to mention is this: Hang around here. While I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about Dr. A's methods - reading posts on this site reminds me of all the things I've forgotten and tells me a myriad of things I didn't know. Turns out ...I wasn't as knowledgeable as I thought.Originally posted by cristylpDitto on all this advice. The book is the best investment you can make in yourself for your weight loss journey.
Good luck!
Simple example: In another thread someone mentioned their water intake. Y'know - I hadn't been monitoring my water in take in ages. Now, I'm going to start. I used to be a water-zealot.
It all seems so simple, but it takes some doing. Read posts on this site. It helps.

Re: custom low carb diet
Not sure that I would follow Giovanni's New Diet Revolution.
Atkins is steeped in science and I prefer to know how the plan works.
Think of Atkins as a science experiment. There are reasons for the carb limits and the carb sources; there are reasons for the protein and fat. There is a reason why it has been studied and has a recommended distribution of fat, protein and carbs as a percentage of calories a day. And induction is only two weeks and you can move up through OWL if you choose.
Not sure I want to re-invent the wheel. I'd rather listen to the good advice of people who have followed the plan as it was written. That way, I'll get answers to questions I raise based on the science we who follow Atkins have chosen to follow.
But, best wishes on your do it yourself low carb plan!

Re: custom low carb diet
The OWL phase is basically a systematic way of customizing the Atkins Diet to your particular metabolism. It is through this phase, as well as the pre-maintenance phase where you learn which foods your body can and cannot tolerate and in what quantities.Originally posted by IrishIrishAnd induction is only two weeks and you can move up through OWL if you choose.Robbie T., 240/180/160. 41yr Male, Height 5'9"
