  • Getting in ketosis and staying there!

    Hello!

This is my first posting as I am a brand new member of this website! I am 54 years old, and diabetic, and very familiar with Dr Adkins. I started out in April weighing 270.5 and am down to 233. At first I was in the *moderate* section of ketosis, and that lasted for about a month, but since then I have basically been *negative*. still losing.... Last week, I started back on the induction diet. After 6 days, I finally got a *trace* reading. Now, this morning, I am back at a negative reading. If this is a result of what I ate 2-3 days ago, which I was eating basically protein, how could this happen? This has been my pattern. last nite I had two protein shakes, at 5 gram per. so I am wondering if that is why. I am concerned that this is due to me being diabetic, or is something wrong with my kidneys?

Also, what is the difference between urine testing first thing in the morning, or in the evening, as Dr A suggests in his book?

The weight loss is GREAT, I am pleased with that, but I miss the *no hunger* part!! I have a long way - weigh - to go , another 50-60 pounds, and need some help!

    thanks

Re: Getting in ketosis and staying there!

Ok, firstly, welcome! Atkins is a superb plan for diabetics. Now, Atkins is NOT a high protein plan, it is a high fat plan. You need to eat whole foods, not protein shakes; it doesn't matter how many grams carbs they have, they are not to be eaten on Induction. Please follow the induction plan laid out in the 2002 edition of the New Diet Revolution book. Concentrate on whole meats, cheese, fats and veggies (according to plan).

Now, about those sticks. They won't always show you pink. If you drink a lot of water, you will dilute the ketones and you sometimes won't show pink. Don't worry.

Don't worry about the sticks. You're losing and you are still in ketosis if you are following the plan. Like GMom said, you can get negative results from drinking a lot of water. This is good, don't change that. Don't eat just protein though. When eating escessive amounts of protein it can convert to sugar in your system. You need to eat your veggies.

I was down to 175 in 2007 and I will get back there again!

actuaslly you are knocking yourself out of ketosis with the protein. Atkins is only 30% of your total cals as proteins because excess protein is converted to sugar for storage and since you are low carbing this sugar will be beeing used as fuel instead of your body fats so reread your DANDR and get some healthy fats into your plan that is where the appetite suppression comes frome.
