• Drink lots of water, it's ok

Hello all,

I'm new to ADBB and am in my second day of induction. I have spent a lot of time reading and reasearching. I had a question about how much water I was supposed to drink...which I found out from the wonderful induction forums. I than did some reasearch to find out how much water I could safely drink in a day. The answer I found is that the human body can safely process up to 4 gallons of water a day if distributed through out a 24hr. period. This is good to know, especially for people like me who used to make the excuse that I would get ill if I drank too much water, so I never drank enough. Now we know. I don't know anyone who would drink that much water...or who would want to. Here's to H2O! Drink up.<img>

Actually when I was in the Army I knew a guy who drank too much... almost died. Your cells start to explode. So yes, you can drink a LOT, but too much of even water can kill you.

Any idea quite how much water that guy had drank?

I think I'm going to set my new daily water goal at 20oz under what he drank. That would be impressive. And I'd totally be living on the edge of death every day!!

No idea... he was a WEIRD guy. Completely and totally obsessed with everything that went in and out of his body. But I do know he carried a gallon jug of water with him everywhere he went and emptied it more than once. I forget the exact medical condition it induces, but essentially the water balance causes the cell walls to weaken and eventally they just can't hold anymore. Pretty ugly thing.

Re: Drink lots of water, it's ok

When I was in basic training I drank well over 6 gallons of water a day and never had a problem. I had a gallon down before breakfast. One canteen (quart) out of the rack, two during PT (physical training) and one after PT. But it was also July and August in Georgia, so understood that it was extreme conditions.

I have heard of the issue before but I believe (if I remember correctly) that there must be an underlying kidney condition for it to occur. Otherwise kidneys love to work, the more they work the healhtier they are. (disclaimer:I am not a doctor)

Info re. water intoxication and hyponatremia:

Bottom line, don't drink the water too quickly and be sure also to replace electrolytes you have lost

Before we terrify anyone with that link above.

From http://www.honoluluclub.com/pulse.php?ID=31 an article on facts of hynatremia
*Important Message*
Remember that hyponatremia is a rare condition for the everyday exerciser, which classifies the majority of the active population. Please do not regularly substitute other fluids for water. Our bodies are made up of approximately 65% water and water intake is essential for healthy living. However, if you consider yourself an endurance athlete (e.g. marathon runner, Ironman triathlete), you also need to replace electrolytes to avoid ?water intoxication?. Likewise, please do not increase salt in your diet as a prevention method for hyponatremia as an excess of salt is believed to be a risk factor for hypertension. A sports drink will do the trick for most people.
I think everyone here falls into the "everyday exerciser" category, we do have some marathon runners, but for most here plenty of water should not cause any issues.

Re: Drink lots of water, it's ok

I think one should clarify the salt/hypertension issue. When you replace electrolytes, it should be done in proper balance among all the mineral salts in your body. Thus, if you get more than enough sodium chloride but are deficient in potassium or magnesium for instance, you should NOT add table salt (NaCl) to try and replace the needed electrolytes. When most refer to excess salt with reference to hypertension, they actually mean table salt.
