  • Ketostix too dark: is there such a thing?

I was reading the information that came with the Ketostix I bought the other day. It seemed to imply that some levels of Ketone are too elevated and potentially dangerous. I just wanted to know if I got the wrong impression, or can you be dieting too hard. Maybe it only applies to ketone levels when you're not dieting. I saw that there were other purposes for the stix like measuring levels of stress.

I'm only concerned because mine turned sorta of pinkish-purple, and it was way up there on the color guide scale.

So how about it? Is there such a thing as too dark?

Re: Ketostix too dark: is there such a thing?

they are referring to a conditon called ketoacidosis that diabetics can get into.

With your Atkihns eating exercising and water drinking you shouldn't need to worry about that. That is also why when folkk post about being dark purple most experienced ADBBers will tell them they are dehydrated.

Oh and save your money cause unless you add new to your foods or drastically increase your carbs you should have the physical symptoms of ketosis the breath the smell the thirst, the incheslost , the pounds shed, ect., so you know you are in ketosis

      Thanks, that's good to know.
I already bought them and opened them and everything, so I can't return them. But thanks for telling me about the other symptoms. I just saw them mentioned somewhere else on here and thought they might be a useful thing to have. Them being the stix, I mean.

don't get frustrated if your stix don't show the same color each time you use them either as it is like being preggo you are in ketosis or you aren't

save your stixs for OWL as you climb the carb ladder and add more carbs to your plan you might need then to know when you reached your CCLL.

2big, when you say "breath" do you mean your breath tastes sweet? I've noticed that a lot lately and was curious about it.

I was actually about to ask the same question. My breath tastes really sweet, too. I thought maybe ketosis breath was really bad smelling, but it's sweet. It's very pleasant.

I've always thought it must be bad breath too, but I was just telling my husband that it tastes sweet sometimes and I was wondering if that was Ketosis breath.

Maybe we'll find out soon because I thought it must be rank the way some people have posted.

yep that is what ketone breath is. too many folk are off gasing volital oils like garlic and think that bad breath is ketosis. Dr Atkins discribed it like ripe apples.

Re: Ketostix too dark: is there such a thing?

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere - but what if the sticks NEVER turn a color? I've bought a new box so I know they are good. But the old box and the new one never budge! Even on 15 carbs a day.

I take LOTS of supplements and drink 5 liters of water a day - could that be the reason?

I don't really notice any of the other ketosis symptoms either. I'm not fussed about it - but would like to know if it is possible that I'm never in ketosis? Or that the sticks just don't work for me?

                  Thanks!

Re: Ketostix too dark: is there such a thing?

                    stix lesson 101
1)ketones come in 3 types stix measure only the type that is burned by body tissues for fuel so if you are burning off your measurable ketones you will never get color.

                    2)stix measure ketone concentration
you drink 100 ounces of water your pee will be less concnetrated then somebody who only drinks 10 ounces of water so if you both have say 500 ketones 10 ounce person's concentration is 50 and yours is 5 big color difference on stix but same amount of ketones.

As I said put your stix away and save them for when you are in OWl and trying to findout if you are out of ketosis or hit your CCLL or got a food your body can't handle. then you might need them.

So how can a diabetic do atkins safely? they arent supposed to be in keytosis althought they are told to keep a low carb diet practice.

                        Hmmm.....

I understand your point, but disagree. I still find them to be a useful tool if you've been at this for a while. Many times I've fallen out of Ketosis and finally found a hidden something-or-other. It also helps me if I creep up too high later one. I like it because the sticks will change faster than my noticing the physical symptoms.

your sticks will chang all day long but you will not be out of ketosis. those physical symptoms will change as soon as you are out oif ketosis and should actusally go faster then the stix cause the stix only tell you were you were since the last time you urinated which could say you are still in ketosis depending on how high the concentration of the ketone bodies was. it can also say you are falsely out of ketosis cause you are not urinating out the correct ketone body for it to measure. the physical symptomes like the sweet breath smell from ther ketones just removed from your blood stream by your lungs, the taste in your mouth fromm the ketones currently in your saliva, appetite suppression cuased by the ketones in your blood keeping the creation and release of glucose stable are much quicker indicastors of being out of ketosis.

And the reasons I gave for using them would have to be met in order for your statements to be true

....found a hidden something or other....
since you were in ketosis already and it knocked you out this would need to be something new you added
                          ....creep up too high.....
you have changed your carb intake for this to happen not something an inductee will need to worry about at all since their carb intake is very limited and the only foods they can eat have very strick rules about ingredients.

actually they are told not to be in ketoacidousis levels of ketones not as Dr Atkins called it benign ketosis. the concentration of ketones Atkinseers have is greatly lower then that of diabetic ketoacidousis

Dr. Atkins' very last book was Atkins Diabetes Revolution. So it can be done. In fact, low carb diets were originally used to control diabetes in the days before insulin was discovered.
