If you've read any of the diet books that are out there, they tend to be geared towards the rich. A lot of the dishes are things I've never even heard of, let alone cook on a regular basis. I eat normal foods and don't buy the frankenfoods, so I actually save money by eliminating the chips, desserts, and box foods (like hamburger helper, macaroni and other stuff...etc) that I used to buy.

The thing about Atkins that is so cool is that there are so many choices for those watching their pennies and those who can buy whatever they want.

I honestly can't imagine eating low-fat--what can you eat?! I mean lots of beef is out due to sat fat and generally higher fat. And dang if it all just tastes awful and doesn't satisfy without the fat flavor. Hmmph..

Re: Forbes: Atkins 3rd most expensive diet

I live in one of the most expensive countries in the world - Switzerland - where vegetable and meat prices are off the planet, not to mention the price of processed and frozen products. Shopping according to the Atkins eating plan does not even come anywhere near the costs that they are quoting . I wonder where they did their shopping?

"If there were one safe, effective way to lose weight, then the others would be out of business"...

Well, there is. Problem is, the average person doesn't want to do it. They want it done for them.

At least, I see that a lot in those commercials for those "We send you your meals pre-prepared" diets. When I first wanted to lose weight, I actually considered trying one of those out. Then, I realized that I was too cheap to do it, and probably too unreliable to stick to it.

Why not just simplify the Atkins diet, and re-release it to the public, with a little ADBB flair. And some of the tough love we have all grown accustomed to? Maybe as a .pdf download on the site. We could put all those dieting businesses, with their corporate "fat cats" that are literally feeding off our low self esteem, out of business. (Yeah, I'm shooting high, but Rome was built in a day. I was there, I oversaw the entire operation)

Unless someone is going to hold their hand, they won't do it. I came here, for a little extra push, so I could do it myself. Which is why I think we all came here. Support.

(P.S. I've never had lobster. I'm afraid it'll fight back, and win)

Re: Forbes: Atkins 3rd most expensive diet

Also... "Weekly sample menus for each of the ten diets were obtained from official publications (such as books or magazines) or company representatives. In the case of Atkins and SOuth Beach, menus were selected from phase two, the ongoing weight-loss phase.

All non-company supplied food prices were obtained from Fresh Direct (excluding tax and shipping and handling coses). Wherever particular items were not availabel, comparable ones were substituted. And if a particular low-carbohydrate product was not offered, its cost was calculated from the 'official Atkins site', without tax, or shipping and handling."

Well, it's good to see that they haven't read the book either, even though they claimed to have gotten the diet plan from official publications. Of course, unless they got the wrong book.

Fresh Direct?....that's one of those places where you order your groceries online and they pick them out and deliver them to you??? Hmmmm, yes, that sounds like something the average working person does. NOT!!! This article is just too ridiculous to believe. We have stores here called "No Frills" and "Price Chopper". That's where real people go shopping.

You know how mom said "If you have nothing good to say then don't say anything?" Well magazines and newspapers don't sell if all the pages are blank. The main topic at staff meetings is "who shall we bash next". This article is beyond ridiculous.

I like to be in control of the food I buy: from the quality to the price. So yes, I price compare. If the store brand of frozen spinach is $1.99 and a national brand is $2.45, you better believe the store brand is what I go home with.

What makes me laugh is the same people that complain eating healthy is too expensive, are usually the ones going to GNC dropping a fortune on the 'magic' diet pills that will solve all their problems....

My personal favourite is the Subway Sandwich diet..don't even get me started on that stupidity

Well, I couldn't even get their crummy site to come up!
Who eats lobster tails for lunch - really!
I can always get chicken breast fillet at $7-8 per/kg (2.2 lbs). I buy topside roasts for 6.95 p/k and slice them into steaks and minute steak for meals. On an $11 roast I usually get 4 steaks and 2 -3 days breakfast minute steaks.
If fish is bought it is whatever is nice and on special, and I buy a lot veges and staple foods in bulk to save $. Pre-packaged meals never get in the door here!

Maybe its different in the state but over here I feel that being on Atkins is expensive.

7 chicken breasts in Asda is nearly £7. A nice bit of steak is around £3-£4, Im not keen on cheaper cuts, dont like gristly bits and excess fat. Fruit and veg is quite pricey. Compared to a bag of 1.8kg of frozen chips which is £1.08p and contains how many servings compared to 1 piece of steak!? I could buy a 3kg bag of dried pasta for £1 and a few jars of sauces for a couple of pounds which would last me all week! There are always BOGOF on junk food, very rarely on meat or veg.

I dunno how the other UK-ers feel about this but I have to agree...Atkins is expensive. Supermarkets and the Government need to look at pricing for healthy food. They got the food pyramid all wrong and if low carb is the way to go then they need to consider lowering the price of food that will reduce obesity related diseases. But .... they wont. As seen on the Super Size Me movie....the 'junk food' companies practically control what the food standards agency do and say and dominate the food market.
