okay many folk talk about following Dr Atkins plan from DANDR BUT are you picking and choosing your parts like skippping the recruiting of friends family and coworkers to be part of your Atkins support network?

ther was a topic about cheating at school and an excellent bit of advise about recruiting class mates to be part of this supoort network was made which got me thinking with all the cheating going on is the support network not in place to help keep you from cheating or has your support network not helped so I figured a poll to see if the network existed was the first question to ask.

My dh is a consultant, so he's out of town regularly. He has certain large customer sites which he visits fairly regularly, so they have noticed the 30 pounds he's lost doing Atkins. People have been really understanding and helpful to him in sticking to his diet.

Most everyone who knows me, knows that Atkins is my WOL. No one believed in Atkins until they saw my success .. then suddenly, I had a captive audience. Amazing.

I don't know if recruit quite fits the description of how I informed my family.

Immediate family is my hubby and girls...they're my prize and keep me on my toes.

Extended family members are another story...it's like fighting Rocky every time we get together over who's way of eating is better. I kind of like it. I'm losing inches and weight while enjoying foods while they're busy counting calories, fat grams, and the hairs on the back of the dog. Bring on the competition!

Friends know and keep me on my toes as well. It's nice to have a support who say, "Are you sure you're supposed to have that?"

I told my parents and sister. They have been nothing but suportive and loving and helpful. And proud.

As I live in another country than most of my friends, I didn't tell them right away. I wanted to make sure this was something I was going to stick with. There are still some I haven't told, just because I want to shock them to their shoes when I come home!!

I had to tell some of the people at my company, because there was a bit of a sticky issue with lunch. I teach at a junior high school where everyone eats the school lunch. There is a lot of rice. And when there is no rice there is white bread. And noodles. And sugar. So...school lunch is really out for me. But I couldn' just not eat it. Because I eat with the kids. So there was a bunch of running around and what have you. I finally settled it with, "My doctor says I must eat a special lunch." The ladies in the office have been really nice and understanding. And the students have complimented me on my weight loss.

I tell most people my WOE when it crops up. Can't say that fits how I see 'recruitment'...as here in Italy very few would give up pasta etc!! But still... people are interested.

I told everybody I know from the very beginning, not only to have a support group but to help keep myself accountable. I knew that if I told everyone what I was doing and I cheated and/or failed, that I would never let myself live it down. It's made me think twice when I've considered cheating. Everyone is very supportive and proud of me and even though I have explain things to my parents (You know, the "What do you mean you can't have fruit?!") they don't try to push anything on me.

                    Re: following DANDR POLL

this is not about informing anybody about Atkins nor recruiting them to do Atkins . it is about did you follow Dr Atkins intructions to get them to help you stick to your Atkins? as in I'm on a new way of eating and exercise so i will be healthier and smaller and I need your help to stick with it when i;n nort strong enough to resist or out at a restuaurant or dinner party with you and think I want a food I'm not supposed to have. That kind of recruiting.

Dr Atkins tells us in DANDR to recruit our friends family and coworkers to be part of our diet support network. If we are following Dr Atkins espically those who are cheat free are we following all Dr Atkins advice?

If I'm not eating by myself, I'm with family, friends or co-workers, so I told them as a matter of course, and this has resulted in extra foods being offered at previously un-friendly meals and fewer no-no's being passed my way. The crew at the office just passes by my cubicle now when they order pizzas.

I cannot say I honestly recruited anyone. If they asked, I told them what I was doing. My family knew, but they also know me well enough..... they knew I was serious and supported me. I was and still am a firm believer that if it is to be it is up to me!
NOW....... I must also say that this place was and still is my support system.
I do have the honor of being my sons support...... he is 22, lives at home and last year decided to give it a try. 1 year later he is down 125 pounds!!!
I do plan on posting his pictures soon.
So, it is true....... I walked the walk and he saw what I did and now he too is a BELIEVER! I also must add, this is making my life ALOT easier. Between hubby being a diabetic and son an Atkineer.........meals are fun!

I recruited several people who wanted to lose weight like me, but they didn't want to stick with the program. One guy keeps going back on the program. He lost about 35 pounds - then backslid. Right now he is doing a modified Atkins and still trying. My family wasn't supportive at first, but they came around. My husband, who was a total non-believer is now very supportive. My kids don't say anything but they quit making negative remarks like they used to.

                            Re: following DANDR POLL

when I started I did not tell anyone at all...like any other change I am pretty private and do not want anyone to distract me while I was learning ..not even my family ...

I still rarely tell people....I have never uttered the words "I can not eat that" or "that is not on my diet" ...I just eat around what I can and get rid of my plate before I was questioned...no one ever did question me...evidently people are aware of what I eat I just do not make a big deal out of it ...I try to blend in wherever I am... but do have a reputation for eating "wierd healthy food" anyway ....

...the only way I actually tell folks is either here on the board or if they ask me in private and seem sincere...

when I take something to a pot luck however ..I leave with clean dishes ...my cooking is highly appreciated

this was a choice for me to make a healthy turn in my lifestyle ...there is a ton of info out there if people want it I do not feel it is up to me to push it ....on the board I think I can say what I want about eating healthy ..but the rest of my life it is up to the individual to choose ...I am not pushy...

Now I need to clarify because as a nurse I do promote healthy living and in urgent care we see a disporportionate amt of obesity related illness ..it would be nice to have a dietitian there to talk to people during the time of crisis about eating well .. ...but we don't and we don't have time to do it ourselves... we are just trying to stabilize people and send them home.....
kind of sad because I believe in striking while the iron is hot and if we had proper teaching when the wake up calls come.....and they do day after day...then maybe we could make a dent....but we just do not have time and there is no staff to do it sadly....
