  • Atkin's Local centers

I am new to this website and apologize if I am posting this in the wrong forum.

My question is why isn't there (or is there?) Atkin centers that run like Weight Watchers. Go in, get weighed and measured, share tips, successes, failures etc.

    Re: Atkin's Local centers

The only one was the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York. It was Dr. Atkins' own medical clinic where he and his staff (consisting of physicans, nurses, nutritionists and therapists) saw patients for a variety of medical conditions including obesity. Unfortunately, when Dr. Atkins died, Atkins Nutritionals Inc. did not see the medical clinic was profittable enough to be kept open, so they rather than selling the medical practice to Dr. A's medical partners or former medical partners, they closed it and gave the patients a 2 weeks notice to transfer their medical care elsewhere.

      Thanks for your reply
I think it's possible to start a center, like weight watchers and achieve the same goals. Don't you? I don't really think you need doctors and nurses, just other people who have been there and done that (a support system and accurate information).

the name atkins is owned by the ANA folk now so you need their permission to open anything like that Just ask our memeber who made the wallet induction foods list what a hassel it was for her to even ask about adding the big red A to it which got turned down. they do have websupport centers though or you can use us for free.

That is a good idea tho. Shame its not done really.

I feel that there is still a negative attitude towards the Atkins WOL publicly, maybe thats why support groups havent been formed. Whenever I tell people that I'm on it, straightaway people tell me its bad! Errmm...hello!! I'm eating veggies twice a day! More than what I was eating before! What is bad about that?

                  Re: Atkin's Local centers

I asked this to the Atkins folk a few months ago. I was interested in opening a WW style class in my area, because there was a HUGE demand for it! But they wouldn't let me, because they have the Atkins Univeristy on their website.

I even tried to argue that there are lots of people interested who dont have access to the internet, but they wouldn't back down.

Maybe a low-carb group could be started and just use Atkins as the guidelines -- that way you don't have to get any type of franchise permission. Christine gave me this website: www.meetup.com to start some type of meeting in my area.
