  • So excited!!! Should I be?????

I weighed in this morning and nearly fell onto the floor!

    Started September 12, 2006 at 232.6
    weighed in September 15, 2006 at 222.4

I know it's mostly water, so what kind of weight loss should I expect from now on?

Also, I do fitness kickboxing 4 times a week, and some weight training 2 times a week.... is there a problem with me adding a protein powder to my diet?... 1 carb per 8 oz. serving, if it's mixed with water....(mmmmmmm- gag)

    Any advice will be appreciated.

        first grats! Wow

I don't know about the protien shake. I'm sure someone from the boards would know though.

I think after a big loss sometimes you slow down a little. So don't stress 10 pounds Is just amazing.

Kickboxing sounds fun goodluck with that.

        And again grats!

        Wewt!!!

Sorry, I took a glance quickly at it and thought it said 236.2 not 232. My mistake. But 10 in 4 is still great going.

A loss of ten pounds in four days is unusual, but not unheard of. As you said, much of it is water, but, hey, that's okay! You're depleting the glycogen stores in your liver, at this point, and each molecule is stored with two molecules of water.

As you move into actual burning of body fat, your weight loss will certainly slow -- but it will happen, so there are more exciting times to look forward to in the future!

As to the protein powder on induction, I think I'll not even attempt to answer, but leave it to the more knowledgeable, such as 2Big.

            Congratulations on a wonderful start!

You should keep an eye on the total protein in you diet - during induction strive for 30% of your daily caloric intake to come from protein (65% fat, 5% carb). If your body has excess protein over what it needs in the form of amino acids, it can convert protein to additional carbs. Check your intake %'s at www.fitday.com registration is free.

Otherwise, the shake sounds ok, but ( ICK!!) why not eat real food instead???

Great advice, and thanks for the link Boonie Stomper! I'm so excited about the days to come, the first couple of days were a little scary...lol.. but now, my cravings for sweets have vanished, and I'm having to make myself eat a little something a meal times. I'm not hungry, but I know I need to eat. I hope I'm doing this right.... Does anyone count their calories, and if so, does keeping them at 1200 - 1400 make a difference?... Just wondering... Thanks

Don't count calories during induction. There is no need.

Re: So excited!!! Should I be?????

When I first went on Atkin I had similar fast weight loss. After the first 10-15 lbs I lost a consistent 4 lbs. a week. That adds up fast.

If I were you, I wouldn't use the protein shakes. If you are following the Atkin's diet you should be getting plenty of protein. Plus, does the shake add extra carbs?

Keep up the excellent work. You've gotta be loving it!

Re: So excited!!! Should I be?????

Okay.. no counting calories... big change there... my mind has become accustomed to being on auto count... lol.. what a relief! As for the protein shakes, it's got 1 carb... as long as i use water to mix it with. I was worried about continuing with my weight training while on Atkins, I'm not sure how much protein will be used by my body just to maintain itself, and how much I would need to build new lean muscle. I honestly think that concentrating on my weight loss is much higher on my "to do list" than body sculpting is right now. Not much muscle to see when it's layered in FAT!

Again, you guys have all been so great, and so informative. Thanks

Hi Jennifer - I think you said it best - Not much muscle to see when it's layered in Fat... I've done weight training for about 2 years now, with the only time I was losing weight was spent on Atkins. I didn't add protein just to add protein, your body really does fine maintaining and building without it. Especially when you're eating a lot of protein on this WOL, at least I am.. more than you do eating high carb especially. I would have a protein shake every week or so (after a couple months of extended induction) the last go around more as a dessert kind of thing.

Re: So excited!!! Should I be?????

I think most people on Atkins find that they increase their Lean Body Mass even without weight training. I've been doing weight training on Atkins and there are a LOT of others who have had exceptional results without adding additional protein.

Now, with that said....I also know many who do use Whey Protein Isolate (protein powder) for lots of things...shakes being only one use of many. What you do not want to do is replace a nutritious meal for a shake. Keep in mind that those shakes will not have the appropriate ratio of fat/carbohydrate/protein, so you'll have to add some fat and carb along with them. OR use them in baking recipes (check out the food and cooking chat forum).

I would NOT recommend using protein powder during your first 14 days. After that, I think there are lots of people who use it.
