    Re: Word of caution

Putting in my 2... no, 3 cents here:

    1. Vitamins A & D both should be watched carefully, as they can have dangerous toxic effects at high doses

    2. "special" vitamins (ie one for hair, one for eyes, one for nails, etc) are typically just a selection of some of the same vitamins you get in a multivitamin; if you take a high-potency mult these "specials" are not only wasting your $, because you will just piss away the excess of water soluble ones your body doesn't need, you could also end up OD-ing on things like A, D or certain minerals, if present in both the muti and the "special" vitamins, if you take both at the same time.
    3. Don't over-fret about SOME hair loss - it is a natural phase of the normal hair life cycle, that new hairs grow and old ones are lost on a cyclic basis.

      Re: Word of caution

Just wanted to add that even though I was loosing my hair at a very rapid rate, I continued induction (I wasnt even 5 days in when it started) but I was loosing a little anyway still from the birth of my baby almost a yr ago now. It was slowing but picked back up when I started induction.

However, I am still on induction (extended) and havent changed a thing yet my hair loss has slowed on its own. Its gotten a lot better. Hopefully will stop all together (besides what is normal).

        Re: Word of caution

Hi gals, I have no idea if anyone has posted this or not but I am going to copy and paste what the Atkins website had to say about hair loss:

Why have I started losing hair?

It is natural to go through periodic phases of shedding hair. But if this is an ongoing problem, make sure you're not restricting calories or skipping meals. Any weight-loss regime may lower your metabolic rate as a survival mechanism, which can result in hair loss. Unlike calorie-restricted diets, Atkins is the least likely of any weight-loss programme to contribute to hair loss because the higher caloric content keeps the body from behaving as though it is in starvation mode. Alternatively, you might be low in some specific nutrients that could affect your hair loss. You might try adding biotin, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), glutathione and lecithin to your diet. If excessive hair loss occurs, see your doctor.

          Re: Word of caution

Whenever your body goes through some type of traumatic stress you can have hair loss, even with a perfect diet. This happens when people have strokes, heart attacks, birth of a child, surgery etc. I had some hair loss in the beginning of Atkins, but that I'm sure was due to the difference in eating patterns. I went from eating completely carbs to low carb. I'm sure that was traumatic for my body, hence, the hair loss. I also lost hair after the birth of my children. I didn't fret about it, because I knew this happens when we put our body through some stress.

Just FYI, your body doesn't shed hairs during pregnancy as often as it does when not pregnant, then after your body does an estrogen crash right after the birth of the baby, it starts shedding the hairs it should have been shedding for the duration of the pregnancy. It's not due to the stress of pregnancy and childbirth that your hair falls out.

Yep, me too. I guess its a normal part of aging ? I have also had thyroid issues for the past 10 years which didn't help either.... Mine is thin, but it grows like crazy .. I just wish it would grow THICKER instead of longer.

                Re: Word of caution

I suffered from hairloss after child birth and then it started again a year later after I drop a quick twenty pounds on induction (it stopped after about 3 months). It was just a shock for my system. I had a varied diet of veggies and a variety meats so i am pretty sure that wasn't the issue. I have also wondered if it was the fact that I put on 40 lbs in 8 months (Curse you, post pardum!!) and then took it off in 6 months (Thank you, Zoloft and Dr. Atkins!!). Either way I have had "grow back" fuzzies for over a year now. *gripe* I do recommend VO5's Play It Again hair paste for keepin' the fuzzies in check.

                  Re: Word of caution

Vitamin A can be very toxic. It kiled soem polar exploreres (sorry, cannot remember which group) in the 1800s. They were marooned as their boat had been destroyed by ice and they had to kill and eat their dogs (no food for them). They ate the livers, thinking they were good for them but that is where the body concentrates vit A. They suffered blindness, hair loss, extreme debility and eventual death. SO make sure you are not getting over the daily recommended maximum. Below is a site with figures.

                      Re: Word of caution

It just makes you mindful that ALL animals secrete and concentrate vit A in the liver. So if you are getting enough you may not need to eat a lot of liver. If you LIKE a lot of liver (this is umimaginable to me but I guess someone out there must like it) then you may not need to supplement vit A at all.

                        Eeek!

I'm averaging around 1,650 per day and the recommended is 750! It says I get 236% of the RDA.

It shows that it comes from my multi-vitamin (top one) and then from the foods I eat (spinach, milk, flax muffin, coffee are the next top contributers).

I guess that means I need to stop taking my multi?

                        What do you think?
