  • Weight Gain?!?

I am on my 4th week of Atkins, and I've followed it how I should. Last night, I weighed in at 135-A 10 lb loss after 4 weeks. I have been at 135 for about a week now. Then I weighed myself today and the scale says 143....I am just wondering how this is physically possible?!? I haven't had a BM in a while and am kind of bloated, but can that cause an 8 lb weight gain??

just before TOM I can bloat up to 5-7 lbs of water weight, especially if i've been eating salty foods.

      Hi and welcome.

Your BM can weigh quite a bit--depending on the amount of material in them. Water retention can "add on" weight too. I weighed a 0.5 liter bottle of Deer Park water once and it was about 1 pound!!!

Be sure to check your inches as Dr. Atkins wrote the loss of inches represents the fat emptying from your cells.

Don't fret. There are MANY different reasons for the scale to go up, however, if you have been eating your Atkins (but not overeating it), exercising and drinking your water, fat gain is not one of them.

Give it another week and try to put it out of your mind. You are doing great!!

For those of us who are banned from our scales, I just have to say, I'm jealous that you're weighing at night and in the morning. Please consider creating a mathmatical equation which takes into consideration any BMs, workouts, lunar phases, menstrual cycles (even if you're a man), food eaten in the past 3 days, water drank in the past 26 hours, and your mood at the time of weighing. It takes a little while to come up with this equation but it's totally worth it if you're weighing yourself this often.

            Re: Weight Gain?!?

I have seen the weight bounce like you've noticed. Like Lyssie says, it can happen for a whole # of TEMPORARY reasons. It is almost certainly water or waste retention for some reason. One of my most common ones was exercise and body repair. The reasons will correct themselves in time, and you will go back to your true weight which might even be less than where you were.

              Re: Weight Gain?!?

I agree with Kent on the exercise/body repair issue; heavy exercise will cause your body to TEMPORARILY retain fluids while the muscles repair .. it does go away!

Congratulations on your success so far!
