  • One Month on Atkins - pills & knee questions

    Hi everyone -

Well, I've been one month on Atkins - got off Induction 2 weeks ago, weighed myself for the first time this week and I lost 15 lbs. (and one belt loop size) at this point. Starting weight=336 Present weight=321, and headin' down!

I'm a type 2 Diabetic and I've been testing my blood sugar regularly, and this diet has been super. Before, I averaged around 130-150, now I'm averaging around 100-120. Not bad. And I feel a whole lot better also. By the way, for some reason, whether it's the diet or the lowered blood sugar level, I've noticed an improvement in my... er.... uh.... "desires". (good for the marriage, I guess!)

Just starting to read the Atkins book (I know I should have read it first), but I ordered the correct version from Amazon and it just came last week.

My question is this - I'm already taking a multi-vitamin. I don't have a lot of money to spend on additional vitamins and supplements, so in your opinion, if I were to limit my purchase to 5 additional vitamins or supplements, which 5 would you recommend I get? (not including the good daily multi-vitamin I'm already taking).

Also, I have a bit of knee pain occasionally, is this normal? I'm drinking a lot of water. Is there any "safe" over the counter med that I can take without it affecting my weight loss?

Thanks for any help you can give!

    Hi Teeja!

    Welcome!

Not sure about your knee problems..... have you had them before? Are you exercising and if so did you start recently?

CONGRATULATIONS on that LOSS! WHHOOWWHHHOOOO!!!!!!! and more congratulations on those readings!

Check out our Vita-Nutrients forum for advise on the vitamins. As for pain relievers, I have never heard of OTC pain relievers effecting anyone on this WOE.

Stop by the diabetic forum and say "hi"!

      Hi Teeja,
If your knee keeps bothering you, I would see your doctor. My knee also bothered me for a year, so I finally went to my orthopedic surgeon. The MRI said I had a torn meniscus and I had surgery for it. I never injured it ever. I believe I got it because I was morbidly obese.

About the pain relievers, I believe Dr. Atkins said in his book that NSAIDS may hinder weight loss.

You might want to check out Dr. A's Vita-Solution book from the library.

BTW, you are doing very well, congrats! Getting that Diabetes under control is wonderful.

First off congratulations on the 15 pounds weight loss!

As to your first question in addition to a good-multi-vitamin, I'd recommend you take some CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine, which assists in metabolizing fat cells. I felt more energy on my exercise especially when I was still doing Induction when I took prior to it.

As to your second question, is it due to exercise or is it chronic knee pain. If it is due to exercise or use, I'd recommend an Arnica cream to rub on it.

welcome to ADBB and to Atkins.

Firist you really need to plug your menues into a vitamin and nutrian calculater and see what you are deficient in if any thing. making poor food choices can make you very deficient and making great choices can leave you lacking nothing. Be sure to add your multi vit to the calculator too. I was low in potassium in induction but perfect in everything in OWL so I just took my mulit and nothing else. other take all kinds of things cause they think they feel better when they do. the placebo effect can work wonders but America has the richest waste water in vits and minerals in the world.

I agree with Kent about taking the CoQ10 .. its very heart healthy. Besides that, I think a good multi-vitamin should do fine!

Congratulations on your success so far and getting that diabetes monster under control!

Thanks for all the help and great encouragment! I'll check out fitday for sure.
                Vitamins.com has a combination CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine pill that I'll order.

Not sure what's causing the knee pain, but at times it can be pretty bad. It never happened until I got on Atkins. I'm not doing much different except for doing Atkins. I took an Aleve pain pill and it helped a lot. I started some weight training and stationary bike riding, but my knee problem started a week before that.

Has anyone had Aleve cause a stall in weight loss?? I'm a bit scared to take them if they will stall things.

Teeja, perhaps you should see your doctor regarding the knee pain. I found this:

Gout is an uncommon cause of knee pain. However, in patients who have a diagnosis of gout, it must be considered as a cause for new onset knee pain.

I forgot to add, that you may not know you have gout and could be causing the knee pain. There are other reasons for knee pain too, go see that doctor!
