I feel that this is a plan that takes time to learn ..you can not overnight change your entire way of thinking about food...

but that is just me and me thinking again ....
I am all for you thinking Heidi and certainly providing counterpoint to me, but I tell you what there was not a better term for me and my avoidance of foods. I don't cheat. I play fair and by the rules. So for me, equating eating off plan worked for me, and hence I still use it today for everything if you've seen me "cheating: is it inevitable" video. That's what works for me. It might not work for anyone else although I have seen enough posts here who claim cheat-free status to make me think its mentality works for them as well.

I personally found the term enabled me to correct poor behaviors and set me on the straight and narrow. Perhaps the term is like the scale. I weighed each and every day (often twice) to keep me accountable. That worked for me where for others the slightest bounce might be troublesome. So the term is neither good or bad, but it is more probably in the perception that determines its appropriateness. Within the looseness of OWL rules unless you tell me the rules for the game in which you are playing (since the rungs are just a suggestion), I normally don't judge anything for someone as a cheat. Someone saying they are at the first rung and want to have whole pizza or wedding cake, I will certainly advise against though.

As someone who experienced hairloss initially, what's healthier eating pizza every day or eating this diet? I certainly had lots of hair before, and thinned initially with the diet for a few months when presumably I was eating healthier by almost any standard. The hair came back, and I didn't change anything diet wise. Hairloss can simply be a sign of change.

As for the overnight change, I'll admit that overnight one might no longer want pizza or give up their cravings for General Tso's chicken anymore. It did however take only a few weighings to see the results that convinced me that I was on the right plan.

The more and more I do this diet, I see fewer absolutes (outside of Induction), but that certainly does not preclude my recommendations based upon what works for me. I try to respond with that in mind, and I try to be as upfront with that in my advice. If my advice doesn't work for them, I just trust that someone else's will, and they will ignore mine. I figure mine will resonate with some and others with someone else.

So please continue to think away, but please don't mind my attempts to provide similar sort of support...

I did figure out at one point the average number of carbs in 1 cup of General Tso's chicken... I had trouble trying to determine the rung it fell under though. I really think it should be it's own rung - before fruit.

BUT I got to say Forrest
why do I have to read the book? I use the internet to do ALL my reseacrh for just about everything I do in life. Its a GREAT resource and saved me the 30 bucks on the book that would have ended up on my shelf not being read.
dude $30 for DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 edition? ReallY?? where do you live cause I got 4 copies I want to sell and then invest that $120 in 17 new copies. Brand new DANDR costs less then $7 and is the best $7 you will ever spend cause if you are without a computer or the power is out your DANDR has the answer. it answered your what do I do after I cheat and am out of ketosis question in several places.

From Amazon.com, the cheapest price I could find for a new copy was .01 + $3 in shipping. I personally bought a couple of my copies locally from Half-Price bookstore for $1 each.

See, this is what instant gratification people like me miss out on. I say "I want that" I go out and buy it immediately, I hate waiting for shipping or paying $20 to get it overnight.

I've been posting here for a few years, and I can't say enough how much this board has helped me with my weight loss journey. Lots of helpful, funny, intelligent, encouraging people on here.

That being said, it makes me cringe to read some of the replies some posters get. I KNOW you're tired of hearing people say "I'm only eating one Oreo a day...why am I not losing?" and other obvious questions, but even legitimate ones almost HAVE to become an argument. Any time I see a post about a planned cheat, I already feel bad for the person posting.

I think most people KNOW they shouldn't be cheating. Or even if they don't get how it knocks you out of ketosis and so on, I think they know on some basic level that what they're going to eat isn't good. But this is REAL LIFE. Ideally, we'd all move along induction and the rungs with no problems and no snags, and we'd all be thin and beautiful in no time.

But it doesn't work that way. People don't buy the book right away. So let's GENTLY encourage them to, and help them out until they do. People plan cheats. So let's GENTLY offer alternatives to cheats, but if they decide to anyway, let's encourage them to hop right back on. People sometimes just don't "get it" - it can be hard to go from eating low-fat to training your mind to think in Atkins mode. So let's GENTLY push them in the right direction. That's why we need the board, no?

I get why it's important to be almost militant about Atkins, I get why not cheating is so darn important. But, everyone else may NOT get it, or may succumb to real-life pressures, so why treat them like idiots when they don't?

I'm not comfortable talking openly about things regarding Atkins on this board, and that's unfortunate, because in many ways it is my support group.

Whew, I rambled on a while! Forgive me

Doeskin, this is Real Life, but for many of us folks who have serious troubles with the carb floodgate opening, cheating for a week can be EXTREMELY difficult to bounce back from. I feel it is my responsibility to share what I have experienced and hopefully persuade a person about to undergo a prolonged cheat to reconsider.

And let's not forget that IT GETS MORE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO LOSE AFTER RETURNING TO ATKINS AFTER A PROLONGED CHEAT.

To put that topic this one was referring to in presective for a carboholic it is no different then a drug addict or an alcoholic says I'm going on a 5 day bender and when i stop how do i get clean again? carbs to a carboholic are exactly like drugs and alcohol to them. would you really sit idely by and say okay do it and then on day 6 do this..... or would you try to dissaude the them from ever starting?

and even if Forrester isn't a carboholic
If you knew that somebody was about to be in diabetic sugar shock for 5 days would you just day good for you go right ahead and do it and when you are done this is what you need to do to get back in control? that is what going off atkins is going to do to that person's body.

I really do not think any of us could nor would be that kind of person.

Well that's basically what I was saying, if/when the carb floodgates DO open for some people, let's encourage them NICELY to get back on ASAP. I've seen some really sarcastic and/or rudely put responses that I know I would have been offended by if they were talking to me. I guess my issue is more with the WAY it's said. I know you've given lots of advice, G-mom, and I wasn't at all talking about you!

Of course cheating shouldn't be condoned, but people DO it, just like unfortunately drug addicts DO relapse, and I think encouragement does more good than ostracizing them from the board.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with my post, that is just my take on all of this, and my reaction to some posts I've seen. I have no beef with anyone here , I still love the board!
