  • In Ketosis & not losing - is it possible?

I've been trying to find the answer to this in DANDR, but can't seem to find anything....

If I am sticking to the plan, and in ketosis (moderate purple on the strips) does this mean I'm losing body fat, even if my weight is not going down? I know I'm not supposed to put much confidence in the strips, but is it possible to be eating too much fat that I'm in ketosis all the time, and burning the fat I'm eating, rather than my body fat?

In other words, does Ketosis=body fat burning?

As far as I know, ketosis indicates that fat burning is taking place. However, it does not distinguish between whether body fat is burned or just fat in general. In other words, ketosis = fat burning (not necessarily body fat).

Have you tried using a tape measure to see if you are losing inches? If you are exercising you may be building muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. Do your clothes fit looser or better? Sometimes the scale doesn't reflect the changes going on in your body, especially if you are building muscle. You might also be retaining fluids?

Yes and no. You can certainly be in ketosis and not lose weight. Ketosis means that your burning fat, but it might be fat you have eaten or fat in your body and even if its body fat, you might not show any weight loss.
      1) How long since you have lost any weight?
      2) Have you posted a menu to see if it might be something else thats causing your "hesitation-stall"
      3) Are you drinking your water, exercising and keeping to the diet.
How much do you need to lose
      How much have you lost
How long have you been on plan

I'm at the end of week 5 of the diet. I lost 15 lbs. during the first 4 weeks and this week I've not lost anything. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything - a week is not long at all. I was just wondering if it was possible to not lose weight while in ketosis.

I have lost inches (one belt loop size) and I started to do some moderate weight training and stationary bike riding this week, maybe that's why.

A typical day's diet for me is:

Breakfast: 2 eggs, 4 low-carb, no sugar sausage links or no-sugar bacon
Lunch: medium salad + small hamburger w/ cheese
Dininer: some sort of meat (fish, beef, pork) (12-15 oz), 2 cups of low-carb veggies.
Snacks (one or two per day): 6 oz of cheese, usually.
Drinks: water (lots), caffeine-free ice tea, occasionally a cup of regular coffee (one every other day or so - had this throughout induction also and still lost weight).

it is very possible to not lose scale weight and to even gain weight while in ketosis as all ketosis means is burning of fat as your body's primary fuel. check thew FAQs on ketostix and you can see how the color and even the amount your stix show is not relavent to shedding body fat

See, I see right away what your problem is, your in that period of hesitation that comes between the 3rd and 5th week. I swear, we get so many folks who come after induction and say they have suddenly stalled out and wonder why. I don't know why, but I do know its very common. I think its our bodies trying to frustrate us. Its that time, we send folks to the closet to try on some tight jeans and they always come back telling us they have lost inches.
Don't worry about it. Your doing amazingly well and the weight will start to come off again soon.

That's too much cheese.. you should only be eating 3-4 ozs a day max.

Did you also know you can never register on the sticks and still lose weight?

I think Lynn is right on with what the problem may be. PISS ( really do not like that, but it is so true). Post Induction Stall Syndrome. Mine was 6 weeks.

The sticks are only a tool as is your scale and tape measure. We have people here at goal that never registered on the ketosis sticks.

I'm with the others. Don't worry! How are you feeling? I'll just bet you never felt better. Don't worry about a thing, there are also times when you won't lose for a few weeks, then suddenly a 5-10 lbs loss! It has happened to me and to others on the board.

Besides the cheese, your menu looks good, but you may want add a bit more fat. Plug your menu into Fitday.com and see what it says. You always want more fat than protein.
