For the girls (or guys) with that extra pad of fat right above the butt on your back, does it hurt to lay flat on the floor to do sit-ups etc, because of it? Today I started a new excercise tape and you have to do sit-ups but it hurt that darn pad of fat right there on top of my butt below my bad. It also gets in the way of doing cruches. Anyone else have this prob?

Mother, you are talking to the Butt Shelf Queen, and I really don't have any pain. Try to put a good firm, but cushy pad under you. Good luck, darlin'.

Re: butt shelf question...lol
One of my Denise Austin tapes for abs has some exercises that might help. She asks you to fold up a towel, and put it on the underside of your bum where it meets the floor (basically, at your tailbone) while laying down to do sit ups. You could try it and see if it helps!
BTW...the Wooshie Fairy in your signature is cracking me up!!

Try using a balance ball or stability ball. I have back problems from a car accident years ago and the ball helps alot for crunches. Plus it's a pretty comfy chair and you work out your core just by sitting on it.~Megs~

I had issues with the butt shelf. I folded a towel twice and used it during pilates. It got better as the shelf shrank. HTH
I think I used to go clubbing with that ghetto fairy!
Love it!

Re: butt shelf question...lol
I've never heard the expression "butt shelf" but I get what you mean (my butt is too big to notice if there's a shelf above it) - but I can't do any of the exercises mentioned either, because it is just too painful!
So maybe that is what is causing it - always thought I maybe had something wrong with my back - good to know it should get easier as I lose more weight!
In the meantime, I'll try the towel/cushion idea.
