  • Great or unrealistic expectations?

I have been on Atkins for 3 weeks and 2 days. My weight loss is 9 pounds. I have lost some inches...4 inches from my waist, 1 3/4 from my hips, .5 from thighs and 1 from bust. I was expecting more from the scale...am I being unrealistic? Patience is not my strong suit but I was hoping for more pounds lost.

Weight loss varies, but I would've expected more weight loss for you too. It's time to critique your diet. Have you followed Atkin's induction to a T? Are you tracking what you eat during induction? Any Splenda or other sweeteners? Is this your second time trying induction? Are you on medications that may be slowing your weight loss? I think there has to be something amiss here. Post how you have been following Atkins during induction. I'm sure we can help.

Paula, everyone will vary. Some people lose quickly, some lose slowly.

Personally I think you have done a fantastic job. 9 lbs in 3 weeks is a great achievement. Don't be too disheartened, keep going and it wont be long until you lose more.

9lbs is a good amount to have lost!

      Well done

        Re: Great or unrealistic expectations?

Congrats on your loss of pounds and even more congrats on your loss of inches. Dr. Atkins wrote that the loss of inches represented the fat empyting from our cells. Fat loss is our goal.

Don't let the scale discourage you. If you replace 1 pound of fat with 1 pound of muscle, that scale won't indicate you lost 1 pound of fat and gained a pound of lean muscle. Nope, it will only register that you haven't lost any pounds.

I always say, unless you walk around with a sign that says "Hi. Today I weigh _____ pounds." no one will know how much you weigh. But they will notice how much thinner you are and you will notice how much easier it is to fit into your clothing, your car, restaurant booths, etc.

So make friends with your measuring tape and celebrate every inch you lose because that's one more inch to the next smaller size.

Paula, 9lbs. in 3 weeks is great. I have been on atkins many times, and failed to reach goal, because of my disappointment after getting on the scale. This is why I won't weigh myself anymore. I realize the only way to get to goal is to stick with my diet no matter what I weigh. I think your doing great! keep up the good work. Pru

I think your doing great! You've lost 3 lbs a week and that's great progress. I think a lot of people come to this board and see some of us that are losing or have lost 8 lbs a week and expect that they will do the same. Everyone is different and many of us exercise every day, increasing our rate of weight loss. Are you on a regular exercise program?

Congrats on the weight loss. Try to look at it as though the glass is half full, rather than half empty. Losing 9 pounds is much better than ganing, right? If you start to think negatively about the pace of your weight loss, you might get frustrated, and quit all together.

Emi, don't get discouraged. Make a new commitment! I would suggest joining the "Weigh, No way!" challenge also. It helps to not weigh yourself for a while and it feels really good to see your results at the end. Congratulations!!! You are doing great!!! Look at the inches you've shed! And if you have doubt about it only being 9 pounds...go pick up 9 (one pound bags of sugar and see how heavy that is). Don't compare yourself to other's weight losses. You are unique and wonderful, your body is going to lose at its own speed.

                    Re: Great or unrealistic expectations?

Percentage wise you lost far more than I did during my induction....and look how far I've come...I've lost 70 lbs in 7 months and gone from a size 22 to a 12. Looking back that's incredible. Soooooooooooooo, sounds to me like you are doing fabulously. The key now is to stick with it.
