  • Ketosis Question

    Hey guys, just a quick question. I have been on induction now for a month...I usually check a couple times a week on my ketosis strips to see how I'm doing and I know last week was pretty deep red.

    Yesterday when I weighed after the week I had gained a pound, so I tested again and I am completely out of ketosis at all!

    I haven't been eating any illegal foods, but I noticed making lunch yesterday that the mayo I had been using had 2 grams of sugar! Would that be the culprit?

    I have been upping my water a lot today and yesterday and ate very strictly today. Any suggestions?

    Hi, Tammy Jo,

    Remember, you're going to bounce around on the scale (because it measures a lot of things...like water, which can be high if you're around TOM, or had too much sodium, or have been weight training, etc). Definately don't let a 1 pound fluctuation throw you off track!

    I'm wondering what type of mayo has 2 grams sugars? Don't use it -- there are so many great tasting mayo's out there, like Hellmans, that don't have carbs.

    My recommendation is to continue in induction (normal induction).

    And take a look at the foods you're eating, in case they are any other foods you are eating that have carbs. In fact, it's best to stick to the list of whole foods in Atkins induction list.

      first testing positive on the stix does not mean you will be losing weight. All it means is you had excess of one type of ketone bodies in your blood stream at the time that urine sample was produced.

      put your stix away and save your money.

      you can never change the color on a stix and be a huge lose cause you are burning those ketones for fuel and don't have excess amounts in a concentration in the urine high enough to show on stix.

      What are you doing as far as your eating? are you only feeding your hunger and stopping even if you got food on the plate room in your tummy and/or carbs in the budget? that is the key to losing weigh eating atkins. make sure your carbs are counted and inside your personel limitrs get enough fat and not too much protein and only feed your hunger. Once you learn that you will be a big loser doing Atkins.

      Then there is the mandatory exercise part of the proigram have you added any new to you exercise this week? if so you could be holding fluid weight. have you checked your inches to see how much fat you have shed as you morph your body working your Atkins burning fat mass adding muscle mass and sometimes fluid mass? scales can't tell how you have morphed if you are down 3 pounds of fat and up 2 of muscle and 2 of water you will show a pound gained even though you are healthier and smaller in size.

        Are you saying that if the stix show a color change, then you are NOT losing?

          No, she was saying, it's possible for some people to use up their keytones while losing weight and then the test will not change color even though they ARE losing weight. Most importantly she was saying DON'T rely on sticks to gage weightloss or should I say fatloss. Also, ketostix measure the concentration of ketones in the urine, so if you drink alot of water everyday (like you should) it could dilute the amount of ketones present to only show a trace change. if you want a proof positive for weightloss, measure, measure, measure!!!

          As far as a 1 pound gain, my body swings up as much as 5 lbs a month just before my TOM and then again before ovulation. It's natural and perfectly normal. That's why many Atkin's Pros here recommend only weighing once a month, if at all. You could lose 2 lbs fat and put on 3 lbs muscle and still be smaller since muscle is small than fat. So definitely get those measurements. I only had one of those metal carpenter's measuring tape so I took a long (longer than I wanted it to be!!) piece of string and used it to get the width of my body parts and then measured the string.

            yep stix color will not guarentee weight loss. read the FAQs about stix and you can learn the science of wwhy or you could just eat 20 boxes of butter a day and be very dark purple but gain weight and know why.
