  • I'm cleaning out my cabinets and was wondering...

I'm cleaning out my cabinets and was wondering if there are foods/ingredients that I will never use again? I know I'm on OWL/berries and that I will still be adding in more foods up the rungs and will keep those things that I'm sure about. But, there are a few things I'm not so sure about.

    Such as:

    Corn starch
Mixes (like for crab cakes, hush puppies, creole rice, etc.)
    Canned soup
    Canned fruit
    Regular peanut butter
All types of flour: rye, pumpernickle, white, wheat, cake, pastry, etc.
    honey

Will some of these things eventually come back into maintenance or are some of these things gone forever? I wasn't sure, but would like some input so I know what to throw away and what to save for later.

Matt (DH) came in and threw out his pancake syrup (he's starting Induction tomorrow) and said that he'll never be eating that again.

    Thanks for any help.

I don't see anything there except many the canned soup and that depends on what kind it is. LOL your food bank is going to love you tomorrow.

i don't use any of those things (except for the soup) for myself although there are some things in the cupboards because i still have a non atkins eater in the house. they are not a temptation to me though.

The rye, pumpernickel and whole wheat flours would be 'legal' on the grains rung of OWL - but you could always buy new if you find a recipe using them, as they dont have an indefinite shelf life.

If the canned fruit is in fruit juice with no added sugar then you can drain and rinse them off to use on the higher fruit rung.

soups might be OK if they have no sugar or flour in.

But as has been suggested - your local food bank would be thrilled to have them!

I don't use any of those, even 5 years into maintenance.

My son is in maintenance and he occasionally eats certain canned soups. There is a lower salt Itallian Wedding soup that he says is quite good and has 7 or 8 grams of carbs per serving. He takes the single serving cans to school with him and nukes them rather than eat the junk they serve in the cafeteria.

I would probably donate or toss all the stuff you have in the cabinet right now. When you reach maintenance it's kind of fun to find the lower carb gems in the grocery store. Peanut butter may some day come back into your life, but it should be the natural nut butter without added sugar.

hwo long have those flours been in your cabinet?

if your body can tolerate them on the grain rung you can use the whole grain ones.

Some several months and others over a year (or two).

Re: I'm cleaning out my cabinets and was wondering...

I'm keeping that kind of stuff because even though I don't plan on eating it, my boyfriend still will, and I want to bake bread, etc. as a gift for family members and friends.

That was a big realization for me--I love cooking, and the actual act of cooking or baking is what I enjoy, not eating it! I was able to bake french bread for my parents, and cook pasta and italian grilled cheese for my boyfriend and not want to eat it. Perhaps if you don't donate it all, you could bake/cook with it for others, or there are some cooks in your family or circle of friends who would appreciate it
