  • Atkins Morning Start question

    Hi to all,

I am reall confused here. Their Morning Start bars claim only 2g of net carbs on the wrapper. But the nutritional facts shows

    Total Carb 15g
    Dietary Fiber 5g
    Sugars 1g
    Sugar alcohol 2g

    Protein 13g

    Am I missing something here??

    Re: Atkins Morning Start question

    Hi,

    Welcome to the board!

The only thing I can say is stay away from those bars... I know they say Atkins on them, but ALOT of people have problems losing weight with them... do a search and you will see almost everyone who has tried to use them has either lost nothing, lost very slow or stalled. And watch out for sugar alcohols, they can wreak havoc on your stomach!

Stay with unprocessed foods... If it is not on the Induction list (assuming you are just starting), then don't eat it... that includes the bars. HTH

Maybe if you eat the wrapper is removes some of the carbs magically.

I wouldn't eat them at all. Many folks absorb every one of those sugar alcohol carbs (even though they claim you don't. Riiight. And pigs just flew out of Paris Hilton's butt, too).

If you do plan to eat one, subtract only the fiber, and count every one of those other 10 carbs... and then I'd find something else to eat that was worth those carbs. Like a guacamole bacon cheeseburger!

        Re: Atkins Morning Start question

The Atkins bars do different things to different people. Be aware that even though some of them say they are suitable for any phase of Atkins...they are not okay for those in induction. If you're still in that phase...avoid them like the plague.

In other phases; however, they could be a life saver if you absolutely HAVE to miss a meal. I've used them sparingly since I started OWL several months ago with quite a bit of success. I count only the 2g of carbs listed on the wrapper and they have never stalled me or had an adverse effect on me.

They are pretty expensive and it's impossible to predict how they will effect you until you try them. Like Dr. Atkins says, only use them in an emergency. For the price of one of those bars you could easily buy something much more palatable that you know won't stall you.

It's weird! It says that it is appropriate for induction too. Why would they claim this, Sounds like contradiction.

They claim this because all they care about is your money, not you.

The Atkins Nutritional Co. wants to make $$$ and they did a lot of things after Dr. Atkins died. So, be wary about them. If you do not have it, pick up a copy of the DANDR 2002 and read it. It'll will explain alot... Also look in the Induction forum under stickies, there is a list of Induction legal foods and a bunch of very good information to help you along!

Thank you, Punkin! I swear, if you leave again, I will find you and drag you back! Ok, I can't really talk since I disappeared from Aug. 2005 to like this summer some time. Lots has happened to me, though.

Anyway, things are back to normal now, we are back, thank GOD.

I'm with Cleo's school of thought - it's 10g carbs. I'm a firm believer in only ever subtracting the fiber, so I always keep the sugar alcohols as part of the carb counts to things even if they don't affect me.

On a side note, why would you wanna eat them anyway? Most of these bars are soooooooooooo nasty compared to real food taste. I think there's a recipe around if you want to make your own low-carb bars for on-the-go meals that don't have weird hidden thingies in them.

                          Re: Atkins Morning Start question

there was an interview with one of the board members of Atkins Nutrionals abut the frankenfoods and how they conflicted with Dr Atkins view points in the NY times and the man said they had discussed it but in the end felt they needed to change Atkins to fit current on the go lifestyles instead of trying to change the folk to Atkins. geez it was that current on the go eating that got everybody needing Atkins in the first place.

yep lyssie Barbde posted one in the exercise section using a nut butter so OWL rung 3 is all you need to make it. there are induction legal things you can make ahead and store for quick use like the egg muffins LISA M is so fond of and the mock danish. you can cook slice and bag foods so you have a meal ready to go in an instant.

For OWL I made a great little mix this morning that I intended to use as toppings for my salad, but it's almost like a trail mix:

                            cubes of jicama
                            grape tomatoes
                            walnut pieces
                            chunked summer sausage OR pepperoni
                            cheese crumbles

For induction, just don't do the walnuts. If you have a bowl of this made up ahead of time and kept in the fridge, its great to grab some and go.

That sounds really yummy, Joy! I just made a chicken/walnut/celery salad that just melted in my mouth! There are so many choices for stuff you can whip up when you have the time, then eat on for a couple days, instead of eating those bars. Plus the bars are horribly expensive. I just say that Atkins is not Slim Fast for a reason...it works best using real food!
