  • Anyone grow your own veggies/fruit? Suggestions?

With the spinach scare (helllooo spinach addict here) and after enjoying fresh-ripened tomatoes and jalapanos this summer (I've also planted blackberries and strawberries), I am ready to give some other foods/veggies a shot next summer!

What have you been growing in your yard?

While it seems premature, it's getting cold in Colorado and I want to start hitting the seed catalogues for some ideas now! Maybe I'll start some plants indoors this winter and get them out when it's safe to do so.

I appreciate any feedback! I'm already thinking pumpkins, cukes, spinach and lettuce, along with zucchini, and blueberries!

if you got a sunny window you can grow spinage at home pretty fast right now.

we got a garden topic not2late keeps merging garden topics into but i had no place to garden this summer like before so I had to really scale back at Mom's and just do container plantings. they have some great lettuce mixes that take just 35 days to mature. In 05 I was growing maters peppers tomotoes eggplants swiss chard okra carrots beets for the tops collards mustard greens spinach kale turnips radishes garlic herbs bush beans.

I'm waiting for not2lates report on the new pumpkins from burpee before I order any for this yr. I had an herloom tomato gsrden with black, brown, red, yellow, tangerine and red tomates but with Mothers critters the deer skunk racoons fox squirrels chipmunks neighboirs cats and birds it is hard to get any maters to eat.

How is your mom? I think she is so lucky to have you watching out for her! I hope you have someone watching out for you, too. It's such an awesome responsibility!

Thank you for your post! That is REALLY good information! I am slightly disappointed with the very short growing season here! We didn't get much of a crop of jalapenos as I'd hoped. I think I'm going to shoot for some of those quick growers you've mentioned, and I'll look for the gardening thread! I have about 250 SF of beds I'm prepping for next year!

get sowem red mats to extend your gowing season by warming your siol earlier and longer and floating row covers work great too on frosty nights.

My squashes are a bust...Not that they didn't grow at all. But that Tropical Storm Ernesto managed to drown the poor guys. Ernesto also destroyed a large part of my bean crop due to the winds.

On the other hand, I did plant a fall crop of lettuce, spinach and snow peas. Again, the weather has been wacky, so I don't think I'll get to harvest much.

Re: Anyone grow your own veggies/fruit? Suggestions?

This is a SORE, SORE topic for me. I was EXTREMELY gung-ho about my garden last year and planted from seed: lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, carrots, pumpkin, cantaloupe and cucumber. AND from plant: tomatoes, green peppers and strawberries.

This is what I ATE: One pathetic, not very good green pepper, a few not very good cherry tomatoes, 2 yucky tasting "super fantastic" tomatoes, one tiny cucumber, one tiny cantaloupe.

NOTHING else grew, or if it did, it stopped growing after a month. I didn't eat any tomatoes until the end of August and they sucked.

I was so devastated. NEVER in my life have I planted tomatoes and had a poor turnout. This was the first summer in Nebraska to plant anything, so the extreme heat may have been a factor, but I watered religiously and not too much. I have no idea what went wrong.

I am going to try again this spring/summer, so we shall see! I want zucchini this year.

I've grown zucchini in past years and had really good success, this year it was awful. They all rotted before they could grow. We did'nt hae an usual amount of rain, and I actually tried both at my house and my cottage. Not sure why I had such a hard time.

I did have good success with kale, celery, rhubarb and cabbage. THough the squirrels got to the cabbage before I did . I'm a terrible gardener, so if those things will grow for me, they will grow for anyone.

Had a good crop of tomatoes in spite of it not being a good 'tomato year'. Looking forward to the cauliflower (the green cone shaped kind that taste yummy), escarole, fennel, radicchio and spinach!

Have re-discovered that having a veggie garden is FUN!
