Re: what to use for tomato sauce?
Mindy, I get the small cans of tomato sauce that are the store brand...they have the natural sugars that are in tomatoes, but they don't have ADDED sugar in the ingredients. The small cans go a LONG way now.
In fact, I had hamburger meat, tomato sauce, onions, mozzerella cheese and pepperoni on top tonight. I've made the same with ricotta cheese too. Sometimes I don't even use the whole small can, just a couple tablespoons. But, it's better than opening a 16 oz can.
Hope that helps...look for the store brands.~Joy

Re: what to use for tomato sauce?
Yes as Joy said the store brands are usually good here as well. Just remember the 'sugars' that show in the nutritional list are ok as long as you don't see sugar in the ingredients.Jen, 39, F

ok, so this sugar thing is not something I have mastered...If I see sugars in the nutritional label thingy, I'm ok, but if I see sugars in the ingredients, I AM NOT...what other names for sugars in the ingredient labels should I look for???74 8/1/06

Re: what to use for tomato sauce?
Tomatoes and many veggies have naturally occurring sugars so that is what you see on the nutritional label if you don't see any in the ingredients.
I normally look for anything that ends with 'ose' (except Sucralose which is splenda), and 'syrups' like corn syrup.
I found this list of sugars:
- Glucose
- Fructose
- Lactose
- Maltose
- Sucrose (white sugar)
- Corn syrup
- Brown sugar
- Honey
Single sugars - these are made up of one molecule.
- Glucose
- Galactose
- Fructose (fruit sugar)
- Sucrose (white sugar) - made up of fructose and glucose
- Lactose (milk sugar) - made up of glucose and galactose
- Maltose - made up of two glucose molecules
