    bruising?

I might should have put this in the health chat section but wanted to put it here because of the traffic.

Since starting atkins back in september, I have been noticing bruises here and there on me. I never bruised easily before and if I ever found a bruise I definately knew what it was from because I only bruised from serious hits or falls. Now I am finding tiny bruises all over the place since starting.

I am sure it may be completely unrelated to atkins but thought I might give it a try because I cant afford to go back to the dr right now because of the co-pays. Is there a chance that your immune system is slightly compromised when first starting atkins or any new way of eating until your body adjusts? I am taking my vitamins and calcium. Even though I eat meat regularly I couldnt find a multi without iron so I am getting iron in the vits as well as food so thats not a prob either (unless im getting way too much ill go check that on fitday.)

    Any clue? Anyone else?

    Re: bruising?

This question comes up quite often, It should be FAQ'd.

One of the old posts I read regarding bruising mentioned that as we lose weight, we wind up with a lot of blood vessels which we no longer need. I'm not exactly sure what happens but the bruising is a result of the reduced load on blood vessels.

I didn't know that. Cool, Robbie! I always thought it was because we bumped into more stuff because there was less cushioning. I didn't know I was hanging onto vessels! Do they ever go away, or do they hang out and mock us?

The only bruising I ever really notice is when I get a hard slap from one of Cleo's boob flaps.

OK so this isn't about bruising, it's about your search for vitamins...

Have you looked for multivitamins for 50+? Those don't contain iron. I take the Women's 50+ multivitamin. I bought 'em at K-Mart, and I've also purchased them at Wal-Mart.

                I use Centrum Silver.

Also, related to the bruising, you may also want to up your Vitamin C intake. Try to get the time release ones since our body is quite efficent at getting rid of excess Vitamin C. 500mg should be good. If you've had other bleeding problems in the past like bleeding gums go to 1000mg (my dentist once prescribed 1500mg). It's also best to spread out your vitamin c supplementation throught the day since high doses past 1500mg may upset your stomach.

Interesting my workout partner and both restarted Atkins in September. She has more weight to loose and has dropped maybe 8-10 pounds. LAst week she commmented that she was bruising alot. One thing is she has very fair skin.

I find this thread very interesting...I also find many bruises on myself that I don't remember getting...I was concerned, but didn't attribute it to this WOE...now I'm going to have to do some research. The main place I notice them is on my stomach and thighs...about the size of a half dollar...??
