Re: Swathes Of Loose Skin? Advice Please

For some folks, excess skin is definitely a health issue. I think there's a difcference between vanity and entailed risks and needing skin removed out of necessity.

Oh Chris, you can disagree with me, that's ok, and that is a sweet thing to say about me, however, I have had many self-esteem issues myself that I might have wanted to solve with plastic surgery. And, yes, it is very easy to say "hey, it's so vain to get plastic surgery!" when many consider you to be attractive. I just find it terribly sad that we, as Americans, primarily women, think that enhancing our breasts, nipping and tucking, lifting and downright changing our bodies will make everything all better and we will somehow be blissfully happy.

I think that we need to love ourselves and embrace our differences. I love women of the 40's and 50's and any decade before plastic surgery where everything was natural. You didn't see a bunch of cosmetically enhanced Barbies running around with the exact same breasts and noses.

Now, that said, I did say in my initial post that there ARE cosmetic surgeries that will enhance the patient's quality of life, especially when infections are involved.

Not everyone will agree with me, but I am one of those people that loves that some people have bumps on their noses (my hubby's is slightly crooked), and untouched by the plastic surgeon bodies. I have my irregularities that I never want to change, especially family traits. Well, obviously this is a personal peeve for me.

Personally, I think that if cosmetic surgery, in whatever form, helps someone to feel better about who they are, and that they are willing to accept the risks involved, that it just may be the right thing for them. After all, many of you, like G-Mom, were blessed with an attractive, desirable appearance. Many other folks were not so lucky, and have had to live with a poor self-image all their lives. Again, I feel if that can be changed, they're willing to take the risks, and can afford to do so, then more power to them!

G-Mom, I think we can agree to disagree on this one. I think that you and I are very much alike in that we do not judge people by their appearance. Sadly, though, so many do; and it is because of that fact that some less than attractive people do suffer.

We all agree that, healthwise, we will be so much better off when we arrive at goal; however, if a poll were taken, and everyone answered honestly, I think you'd find that the number one reason that most folks are on the board is in the hopes that one day they'll look more attractive than they do now. In no way do I belittle that hope.

You are right, Chris, it is true that we are a superificial bunch, especially in this country. That is so sad. I suppose my biggest peeve though, are women who get breast implants when they have breasts already. I mean, women who go from a B cup to a D cup. I can understand if a woman who looks like a boy, she's so flat, wants implants, but just to go to stripper size so a man might be more interested is not wise due to the risks medically and emotionally.

Now, there's not one word in that post that I can argue with. I'll never forget seeing an episode of Oprah (actually a co-worker had taped it and brought it to work) about big breasted women. There were about a dozen of them on the show, and most were so large that they had to lift their breasts in order to cross their legs -- I am NOT exaggerating, I saw a few do just that. It turned out that not one of them was naturally that large. They had all had huge surgical implants (and, of course, I think almost all were strippers). It was actually quite disgusting.
