  • I need portable suggestions!

    Hi everyone!

I'm going on a trip (conference) from saturday through thursday. I've been given 30$ a day to eat. The problem is this:

    1) I'm going to a 5 star hotel
    2) which is 15 minutes from the nearest town
    3) in a Resort town
    4) in canada

So, clearly, I can't afford 3 meals a day with only 30$. Now, I'm okay with spending more if it's not TOO much more, but I can't really afford much more than that. There may or may not be restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, and I'm presuming we will be going into town at night - so at least one meal can be eaten out of the hotel. (Although, let's face it, dinner for less than 10$ that is atkins friendly? I've looked up some menus of restaurants in the town, and a salad at a deli is 11$. *sigh*)

    SO!

I need suggestions of three sorts.

    1) What can I bring with me on the plane that will keep (I need these the most)
    2) What can I buy there (assuming that I find a store) that will keep

So far I've thought of peanuts, beef jerky, and string cheese. But that doesn't include any vegetables at all! Are there any fruits that I could eat that wouldn't be too bad? I am on kind of a modified OWL - I haven't done the rungs but am eating peanuts, Fage yogurt, and raspberries from time to time. Trying to stick around 20-30 carbs a day.

Thanks for ideas! I'm going to the store in about an hour!

Can you find a cooler that can be plugged in? If so, cheese, pepperoni, hard boiled eggs would work.

Just kidding. I just read you'd be on a plane. My suggestion stinks. Sorry.

          Be careful.

Call the airport or your travel agent.

With terrorism and heightened security on airplaces you may not be allowed to board with food, cans, or snacks. It sucks, too! (I know. I wanted hubby to bring me a Pakistani yummy thing he only gets in Dallas, but noooooooooo).

          Call ahead and make sure.

call the resort and findout if they have a complementary breakfast and id so what you can get if they got bagels you got cream cheese some have full breakfasts and others just have bagels coffee and pastry. see if they have a complementary cocktail hr too as the food might be Atkins legal too.

I;m assuming at this resort you got a frig and a microwave in your room so pack some bowls cups plates silverware kknife fork and spoons, pastic bags spocesand herbs you like ( watch the oregano as drug dogs alert on it), some packets of mayo mustard and salad dressings packets of meats, cheese, dried sugar free fruits, some flax seed meal if yu enjoy that and set up your buffet in your room.

Use an online phone directory yellow pages to see if they do in fact have a grocery in the town. being late in the yr I doubt you wil find any road side veggie stands

Nope, no fridge and no microwave. I'm sure the fancy rooms have that, but I'm just in a regular one (with TWIN beds, no less! that costs 300$ a night!)

I really think there will be a mini bar in the room at $300 a night. That's what I have used when I'm in a hotel. They already have them stocked but they leave you room for your own food. I've travelled on business twice, I took flax muffins, tuna salad, p butter (in a small container), celery stalks and pelled cut up jicama. All of which i put in tupperware/sandwich bags and it all fit in the minibar fridge.

Most hotels also have some sort of coffee shop or smaller restaurant in them nowadays.

You can pack snacks in your checked luggage, but not much in the carry on. My dh often goes to a grocery store to get foods he can snack on in his room once he gets to the town he's going to. It's a lot cheaper to pick up bottled water at the grocery store than to rely on vending machines or the minibar stock. Do check on the hotel's breakfast. If they have a hot buffet, you can eat hearty on eggs and breakfast meats in the morning and be less hungry throughout the day. Is there going to be someone in your group with access to a car? If you aren't going to have one, get in touch with them and ask them to drive you to town to pick up a few things. Most people are very understanding of trying to stick to a healthy diet when on the road.

                      Hi everyone!

I really don't think I'll have a fridge, the hotel page lists the 'standard amenities' and refrigerator is *not* one of them. I was surprised, I have to admit.

But, guess what I found? At the sports store, I found a collapsible soft cooler that holds 12 cans. So, I bought that and will bring it with me! Isn't that great?

                      I also bought:

8 tuna packets (genius idea, by the way, I'd TOTALLY forgotten about those)
                      string cheese
                      pepperoni
                      peanuts
                      2 packs of beef jerky

They didn't have any celery sticks, which kind of sucks. if I have time later I'll go buy some. I think maybe i'll try to buy some veggies when I get there though. I forgot to buy plastic bags though!

I'm totally going to have to bring 2 suitcases - my regular one is so tiny!

Oh! I forgot: I also bought south beach cereal bars and zone mini snack bars. about 8-9 carbs each, but they'll be better than nothing in a pinch.

Yeah, be very careful of those continental breakfasts, they are usually all carbs, from bagles to donuts, and very little carbless foods. Sometimes they have hard boiled eggs.
I would take hard boiled eggs, salami, nuts, taking some fresh stuff over the boarder might be illegal, but I would try celery sticks, and peanut butter, if your on that rung.

Be careful with those bars, are you sure they are sugar free? the only zone bars we have here have sugars in them.

The south beach bars i'd definately ditch!!!!

here are the ingredients in the cinnamon ones:

                            Ingredients:
Soy Nuggets (Soy Protein Isolate, Tapioca Starch, Salt), Sugar, Maltitol Syrup, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil, Soy Protein Concentrate, Roasted Soy Nuts, Corn Syrup, Oligofructose (For Fiber), Evaporated Cane Juice Invert Syrup, Sunflower Oil, Maltitol, Brown Rice Syrup, Cocoa (Processed With Alkali), Nonfat Milk, Milk Protein Concentrate, Cocoa, Calcium Caseinate, Calcium Carbonate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Lactose, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Butter [Cream, Annatto (Color), Salt], Dextrose, Whey, Natural Flavor, Palm Oil, Citric Acid, Mono- And Diglycerides, Artificial Flavor, Cocoa Butter, Caramel Color, Ferric Phosphate (Source Of Iron), Niacinamide, Sucralose (Sweetener), Zinc Oxide (Source Of Zinc), Magnesium Carbonate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A Palmitate, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Thiamin Mononitrate Vitamin B1),Vitamin B12.Alergy Information:Manufactured On Equitment That Processes Egg, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Sesame Seed, Wheat

I've checked the other flavours as well and they all seems to have sugar in them.

Yeah, but if the alternative is eating a muffin at the coffee break, I'd rather have the bars, you know?

I probably won't bring them anyway, I think the rest of the stuff is plenty with the tuna. I can have cheese for breakfast (and maybe eggs in the hotel if they're not too expensive), tuna for lunch with a salad from somewhere, and then pay for dinner.
