  • Would You?

An interesting topic came up in one of electives today, health psych. Would you give up 10 years of your life for your ideal weight/body type? That is, if someone offered to instantly give you your desired weight for the rest of your life, without effort, at the cost of ten years, would you take the offer? Sadly, many WOMEN would, including myself. I am probably in the wrong forum, but I am assuming a mod will move this, should that be the case.

    Re: Would You?

its something to think about but no. I've already given up or wasted enough years of my life being overweight - I know Atkins works and that I'll get to my goal without giving up 10 years.
    Thats alot. wow.

Even overweight, at least I'm alive. And I can enjoy things. Fat or thin, I wouldn't give up a minute of my time on Earth just to look prettier or thinner. What I am willing to give up? Carbs, as I've proven by doing what I'm doing. I mean, what good is being beautiful if you're dead (sooner, anyway)?

Well said, Twilight. I'm not sure what point there is in being "beautiful" - whatever that is, if you're dead.

The question doesn't solely refer to beauty. One's ideal weight doesn't equate to only beauty, but health, vitality and the ability to partake in more activities. It's not simply an issue of vanity or the ability to fit into size 4 pants.

interesting. I gave spent 47 years of my life obese. No, I would not give up ten years of my life as it only took me a little over a year to get to where I am now. The thing that I would question is what would have been learned, what habits would have been changed. I have seen many lose weight only to gain it back again (yeah I did that MANY times!). Nope... would not do it. What I have learned is worth more then its weight in gold.

                Re: Would You?

                Great question.

I wouldn't, because I have learned the hard way that physical beauty is severely overrated. And because I have a miracle family from which I have no desire to be separated.

Trade ten years just to have the perfect body? Words cannot express what a foolish sacrifice that would be. (I don't mean that I think you're foolish, gazaleh, just that it would be a foolish choice.)

No I wouldn't now..but i bet if you had asked me this when I was younger I would have said yes....my priorities in my life have changed with age.

I also read somewhere along the same lines that many balding men would give up years of their life to have a full head of hair...so it doesn't just apply to women and weight.

                    Re: Would You?

I think I would, if it were the LAST 10 years of my life--and this is why. If I were to continue to live at my "old" weight and health level, I'd probably be dead 10 years earlier anyway.

                      Re: Would You?

No - I look at the process that's getting me there as also adding to my life expectancy a great deal. Before Atkins, gaining ~10 pounds per month most likely gave me less than 10 years left to live before dying of complications of obesity.

Plus, they would have been poor in quality. The quality of my life improved within days of starting Atkins, and for taking my time getting to my goal, I'm probably adding 30+ years to my life, from the above perspective.

Nope. I wouldn't cut my life expectancy short by 10 years in order to be instantly thin. Considering my family has an average life expectancy of 50, that would mean I'd only be around for a few more years.

                          Re: Would You?

I've thought about this question many times... I can't count the times I've thought that I'd do and/or give up anything to be thin.
I'm still torn on the subject, having lost so much weight already it wouldn't be worth it now.
But if I were back up to 280, feeling like crap, self concious, depressed, etc, then the answer would definitely be yes!

Nope. Being old and crotchety and yelling "you whippersnappers!" and waving my umbrella at passersby and complaining endlessly to grandchildren about how we had to type in our letters into the computer "back in my day" is one of life's great joys, I don't plan on missing out on any of that.

if and only if the ideal body type was perfectly healthy in every way. I could care less about the looks bit for my joints to be perfect and my autoimune illness and soy allergy and any other things gone wrong already to be gone for every sure I'd give up 10 yrs cause those are going to be 10 yrs of pure agony any way.
