            Re: Would You?

I appreciate the honesty that is reflected in this thread. I would say the following response from 2Big sums up my thoughts on this topic:

if and only if the ideal body type was perfectly healthy in every way. I could care less about the looks bit for my joints to be perfect and my autoimune illness and soy allergy and any other things gone wrong already to be gone for every sure I'd give up 10 yrs cause those are going to be 10 yrs of pure agony any way.

Quite a few of you are still focusing more on the vanity aspect of the original question. That being said, I appreciate the fact that the majority of you view the process of getting to goal and attaining a healthy lifestyle more important than the subsequent weight loss itself. Unfortunately, stability is very important. One has to make note of statistics and the fact that 98% of dieters regain their weight within a few short years. Knowing that 10 years of your life would be sacrificed for stability and the knowledge that you will live the remainder of your life with no ups and downs, but a stable healthy weight, may be more of an incentive.I forgot to mention that we had a vote on this question in class and roughly 70% of the class voted "yes". This goes to show that the reinforcement of such topics as "weight", "health", and "obesity" in the media and in social settings is affecting the decision making of a large percentage of the population.

                Re: Would You?

Weight and health are not synonymous (or however you spell it). Underweight is as unhealthy as overweight, especially for women. Unfortunately we live in a society that equates "thin" with "healthy".

Healthy for me is not having any preventable illnesses. That's why taking 10 years off my life to be at ideal goal weight is absolutely worthless if you cannot be disease-free. Skinny people can still have heart disease. Skinny people can still have bone and joint disease. Skinny people can still have neurologic diseases. Skinny people can still have lung disease. Skinny people can still have lung disease. Skinny people can be as unhealthy as fat people.

Again, my family has an average life expectancy of 50. If I were to take the deal and shave off 10 years of my life to be instantly at ideal weight (whatever the heck that means because it's most likely based on BMI and BMI is meaningless for adults!), I would have a few years left on my clock. Not worth it, imo. I'd rather have the weight come off slower and live longer to enjoy that accomplishment.

Also, while it's true that most people who lose weight regain it and more, it's because they revert back to their old eating habits and lifestyle habits. So if you take the time to actually learn how to eat for your body while you are losing the weight, that will reduce the chance of regaining that weight. If you race to goal without learning how to maintain that goal weight....see ya in the "Second Time Around" forum.

                  Re: Would You?

Actually my doctor told me recently that by losing the weight that I have done I have added '10 years of healthy life' to my previous life-expectancy!!

To answer your questoin, Gazelah - at my age I wouldnt want to lose 10 years for any reason (too much still left to do in whatever time I will have) but I might well have thought it worthwhile when I was your age.

Sounds like a line from a pop song from my youth!!
Back when he was 20 years old in 1965, rock star Pete Townshend wrote the line "I hope I die before I get old" into a song, "My Generation" that launched his band, the Who, onto the rock 'n' roll scene.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I think I misunderstood the question and now people think I'm vain.

When you said perfect body, I WAS NOT thinking of the visual aspect--like a bikini body or one that could model haute couture...

...I was thinking perfect health, perfect physical endurance, perfect bp, perfect lean body mass, perfect senses, perfect cognition, perfect emotional abilities, perfectly functioning organs and organ systems. To me, a body that is completely healthy, in shape, and fully functional is the perfect body. So yes, I'd give 10 years for that definition of a perfect body, because if I hadn't gotten on Atkins, I'd most likely be losing those 10 years anyway.
