  • Fish Oil, Fats and Weight Loss

    Hi Everyone!

I'm not really new to Atkins. I'm just newly committed to really making Atkins a WOL and finally getting my boy back to a healthy state.

My doctor has me taking a TABLESPOON of a high quality fish oil daily. Yucky stuff, but much more tolerable than the number of pills I'd need to take daily to get the same dosage. She also has me taking Red Yeast Rice (a pill), a high dose of vitamin D, and a Centrum multivitamin.

#1, will these stall weight loss?

#2, do I need to figure the fish oil into my daily fat intake?

Frankly, I'm not even sure why she has me taking that MUCH fish oil. The other stuff, I know the why's. Is there someone on here who is really up on supplements who can tell me why this would be a good thing?

    Thanks!
    Sandy

the red yeast will have some carbs and you will need to fator that in your plan.

the oil can count toward your fat needs. nmenay folk use them

there is a free only site called www.fitday.com you can join and then make your supplements a custom foold and "eat" them every day.as part of your daily food intake. it will track your stuff for you and you will knowif you got too much fatsor not. rmeember Atkins is a high fat plan so they will be a very good thing ofr it.

2big addressed both your issues. I take fish oil pills which are a lot more palatable than the liquid, but I believe, like your doctor that it is really healthy for us to get our Omegas.
Neither should be stalling your weight loss. Are you having issues?
Stalls can happen for a number of reasons, and some aren't stalls at all, but a normal hesitation period that happens to most of us.
If your concerned you could post your menu in the Review my menu section and let the experts take a look. You can also use fitday like 2big suggested as it will let you know how many carbs your really eating and if your getting enough fat into your diet and enough food.

Re: Fish Oil, Fats and Weight Loss

Thanks, both of you, for the reply.

The issue I'm having is that I'm not losing. I seem to bounce around between 211-214 and never move past there. It has been about 3 weeks now. I can do strict, strict induction, or more ala Dana Carpender and simply cut my carbs down low enough to stay well into ketosis. It simply doesn't seem to matter.

Someone one here had sent in a questions to Atkins, and in the cookie cutter reply they received back one thing that was mentioned caught my eye. They said that you could be in a fat burning state and still not lose if you were providing enough fat in your diet that your engine never gets to BODY fat (I'm paraphrasing, of course) for fuel. I've been wondering if that isn't my issue. So, I've started to pay a bit more attention to it. And, I was wondering if that much fish oil, particularly in liquid form, could be a problem. I do the liquid, btw, because to get the dose she wants me to have I'd have to take 10 pills a day. I'm not a happy pill popper

I will try tracking in Fitday. The discipline to do this daily has not been one of my strong suits. And, I'm not particularly good at measuring everything, including when I cook. I'm so hoping I don't have to become a slave to the food scale ...

I've also started to journal here on the board, including my menu, on the Journal Chat board. I'll transfer the info to the Review board at the end of the day.

I just don't want to get discouraged as I have before, then thrown in the towel. I'm going to check my measurments later today, too, as people are starting to tell me my butt looks smaller. Without kicking in the exercise I don't understand how I could lose inches without losing weight. I'm not doing anything to gain muscle yet this time around.

Hi, Sandy! Maybe you could submit a typical day's menu? Chances are you are eating something you shouldn't, and that is a rather easy thing to fix.

As for fish oils, what is it you are taking? Spectrum Organic Flax Borage Oil is a fantastic one for getting in your Omegas 3, 6, & 9. I take 2 T of it a day. The taste honestly could not be worse; so sometimes, I mix it into shakes or combine it with some organic flax seed meal and a packet of Splenda to make it a bit more palatable.

I'm taking Carlson brand, with a "Great Lemon Taste!" according to the label. Great for the fishes, I suppose Actually, it tastes a bit like canola oil smells with a hint of lemon. It goes down really quick and leaves my lips feeling nice and oily. And it's pricey. But, it gets in the EPA and DHA mgs she was worried about. I was really amazed at how much variance there is in this stuff.

I don't mind downing it, other than every time I do I think about how pricey it is and wonder just WHY I am taking it. But, I can certainly endure the few seconds it takes to swallow it. There's no after taste. I could put it on my salad if I wanted.

I was just wondering if it could possibly prevent weight loss. I'll post menus for a few days and see if that shows me anything.

If I'm getting too many carbs, by chance, could I still be in ketosis?

Re: Fish Oil, Fats and Weight Loss

it you are over eating your Atkins then it could be. but the fat you are taking is no different then somebody snacking on say an ounce of cream cheese.

you don't wan tto be a slave to the scale but your estimat of portion size is what got you needing Atkisn we all did it a serving of something was the size of the container we were putting it in. now is the time ofr you to learn what 1/2 cup of vegies looks like and what 4 ounces of cheese or a table spoon of something. After doing Atkins for so long I can eyeball it but think of the measuring like a kid learning to ride a bike with training wheels they need it when they start but after a bit some can remove the training wheels and do fine others need longer before they are ready.

give Dr Atkins induction a chance accorsing to him 90% of the population will lose weight doing 14 days of strick induction eating and the mandatory daily exercse part of their Atkins.
so have at it and come post a day 15 yippppeeeeee I lost post!.

Re: Fish Oil, Fats and Weight Loss

Thanks for the advice, 2Big. For sure I'm planning on doing Boot camp the next go-round. I haven't posted enough this time to be able to do it. In the meantime, you are totally right about how much a serving is.

You know, I don't know that how much a serving is is such an issue (I've pretty much master the palm, fist, thumb thing) as learning how many different things are okay at one meal. For example, learning how many different items I can have a regular serving OF. I don't know if the way I'm say this makes any sense ...

True Confession: I'm attempting to put my stuff into FitDay. It is going to be a real challenge for me to do this ... I seem to frequently eat things that aren't in the database, so I have to type in all the nutritional info. My personality so doesn't like doing this part of it. Not that I can't change. Right now I'm struggling with whether I want to ... just the FitDay part of it, mind you -- not the way of eating.
