  • Hard Stool--in a lot of pain

Is there anyone out there who has ever had to deal with hard stools that you can not pass? I'm in so much pain that I cannot sit down anymore. I haven't been to the bathroom since Thursday (Thanksgiving Day). I don't need to know how to prevent this, I need to know what to do now. I am taking stool softeners (since last 24 hours). It's not getting any softer and I cannot pass it because it is too hard--it hurts so bad that I cannot breathe when I try to go. What do I do now? (Fiber etc. only works to prevent this... how do I get this one to get softer?)

It's not a "good" solution, but perhaps eating sugar alcohols would help if you're really desperate. They always seemed to work better for me than stool softeners, and very quickly - they might be good in a mini-crises like yours.

I would suggest upping your water. BUT.....if you do not get any relief soon I would say see your doctor.

I am drinking lots of water. It's something that I already do and have really increased since this happened. I am drinking over a gallon a day and I'm drinking warm water, too.

I know that I could force this out, but it's already excrusiating pain... I can't breathe or even make a noise when I have tried to go. It's just too hard.

I'm considering calling the Gastroenterologist's office, but I don't know what to say and I'm not sure what the Doctor could do for me... I'm just scared, i guess. I can't sit down and I can't walk normally. This is the most embarrassing (and painful) thing that's ever happened to me and I don't know what to do or who to talk to....

18and--do you have an idea what could have caused this, as to avoid it in the future? I know that eating too much protein causes horrible constipation...could that be the case? Just something to think about so this can be avoided! I hope the olive oil does the trick...

The few times I had this problem I found that using a glycerine suppostitory worked within half an hour. But stay near to the bathroom after you insert it in case the 'urge' arrives quickly.

I just want to say Thank You to EVERYONE who replied. It's over now!!! It was painful, but it's over. Phillip's Stool Softeners work...still only one way out, though (FYI). Suppositories help, too. I hope that this doesn't happen to any of you. Thanks for all of the serious answers, it's nice to have a place to turn to when you're in need

God Bless; enjoy your holiday season!

I had exactly the same problem as you. I was taking fibre supplements, Sencot Orange drink. It wasnt working and I ate some lo carb candy hoping the sugar alcohols would work but they didnt. I found Senacot tablets which helped ALOT and now my stools are soft and pain free!

Re: Hard Stool--in a lot of pain

In Denmark, just as an FYI, they give magnesium tablets for this problem and they work QUICKLY. To prevent the problem, be sure and keep up with your daily flax !!! It makes A BIG difference. Not to be gross, but my mom has had a constipation problem for years. She's tried EVERYTHING. I had her eat two of my flax muffins every morning and she hasn't had a problem since! Here's the recipe: - good luck!

                      Low Carb Flax Seed Muffins
                      • 6 T butter - melted
                      • 3 large eggs
                      • ¼ cup whipping cream (or half and half)
                      • Beat these 3 ingredients together, and then add:
                        • ½ cup Splenda (artificial sweetener)
                        • 1 T maple flavoring
                        • 1 T vanilla
Mix the following together and add to the above:
                      • 2 t cinnamon
                      • 1 t nutmeg
                      • ½ rounded t baking powder
                      • ½ rounded t baking soda
                      • 1 cup ground flaxseeds
                      • ¼ cup soy flour or Atkin's Bake Mix
                      • 4 oz black walnuts, chopped (optional)
Put into 12 paper cupcake liners in a muffin tin and bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes. You can also double the recipe and get 18-20 larger size muffins.

These have been recommended as "very good with lots of fiber". About 4 carb per muffin but over 3 is in the form of fiber. Other flavorings have been tried - banana, pineapple or unsweetened coconut also taste great. These muffins freeze well, too.

These can also be made in the microwave. In a 1000 watt microwave, 12 muffins take about 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

Glad your problem has worked its way out. Lowering your cheese intake has helped me in the past as well, so you might take that into account in addition to the suggestions about more fiber.
