  • Chewing Gum...the one thing i really miss

    Can we have chewing gum? I have not been able to find anything about it. In the old book that I have (I can't find the 2002 DANDR)it was discouraged. But now with all the new products, is there a gum we can safely chew???

    Well I would guess it would go toward your sweetener allotment for the day. I never cut gum out on this woe, and it didn't cause me issues, that said however, I only chew gum maybe once every 2 weeks, if that.

    If you are a chronic gum chewer (i know it's a habit for many ppl), i would really try to keep it to an absolute minimum...

      Gum is one thing that keeps my jaws from being sore with the popping and having TMJ. I do chew SF Stride or even SF Obit and count the carbs in my daily intake.

        I chewed SF gum since day one. Never affected me at all and I never bothered to count the carbs either. IMO, nobody ever got fat off SF gum.

          I chew gum very occasionally (usually after I've had a potent lunch and don't want to breathe fire on my students) and it doesn't affect me. I do count the 1g in my daily carb counts though.

              Thanks so much, everyone! I guess each person just has to do what works for them. It sounds like as long as I count the carb...I should be okay. I don't chew every day, but I drive a lot and it helps me stay alert and awake sometimes after a really long day. Think I'll not worry about it and chew when I need to, but count the carb. I am at the point where I am really not adding many carbs back very quickly. So, I think a "chew' every now and then shouldn't hurt.

                I never chewed gum until I started Atkins. I needed to find something to stop me from tasting food as I was cooking and helping myself when I was cleaning up from a meal.
                It worked! Now, once in a blue moon I will chew gum.

                    I chew Dentyne fire, 1 carb per piece, and it does not contain aspartame, which is discouraged by atkins. Its hard to find a gum that does not contain aspartame.

                      I chew gum but I don't count it as I'm not really sure how to or if I even need to. It doesn't seem to make any difference to my weight loss. I have Extra sugar free gum which works out as 0.61 grams of carbs per gum. The type of carbs is Polyols. What are Polyols and are these carbs that need to be counted? Do we only count if we swallow (yuk). Often I only chew for a minute or so just to freshen my breath after eating (also a left over from when I stopped smoking) so I doubt if I'd be absorbing the carbs in that short time.

                        Hey Waterx3...read the other posts to this thread. My take is that gum is okay if you count the carb. I have been chewing gum since posting this thread and it has not hindered my loss. I love chewing gum...unlike you, I chew the same piece all day! Only count the one carb...I chew the sugar free and with no aspartme. Happy chewing!
