  • Question for Contact Lens Wearers

I wear contact lenses that I dispose of after 3 months worth of wear.

I just realized, my contacts do not seem to be lasting the entire 3 months since I have started this WOE.

Every time I go to my Eye Doctor, he says "You have an awful lot of protein deposits on your lenses".

It seems like no matter how much I clean them, etc., I always accumulate a lot of protein deposits.

I'm wondering if this is related to our WOE?

    Has anybody else experienced this?

I feel like my contacts are forever dirty anymore. That is a very good question, I am interested to hear from others as well.

I agree, since I started doing atkins, my contact just don't seem clean or as comfortable. Never thought it had anything to do with Atkins until this post. I hope someone has the answer! Would be interesting!

Re: Question for Contact Lens Wearers

My eye doctor commented on the deposits as well, but I never considered it could be from the diet. I've got the daily disposables you are supposed to wear a new pair every day and toss, but I don't. I of course didn't tell the Dr, or she might take away that Rx. I typically wear them 2 weeks, which brings the price per lens down significantly over the cost of extended wear kind. (As best I know they are made of the same stuff anyway). I don't think the diet would be the cause of build-up however. I've been doing this for years, and the main thing that seems to interfere with how long I go before lenses get uncomfortable is touching the lens with unclean fingers, (ESPECIALLY while eating fried chicken!), which deposits oils, proteins and other dirt onto them. The doctor said I should try not to touch my eyes so much - a habit I have admitted to, due to dry eyes.

There definately is a rapid build up of deposits that I can directly associate with 'crying tears' (as opposed to regular tears), as a crying spell always forces me to change out lenses.

Re: Question for Contact Lens Wearers

I have always had trouble with dry eyes and contact lenses, I seem to dry out quickly. for me I got these lenses after I started Atkins and they seem ok. They are the really porous type though, because I've had problems before and they have to be changed every 2 weeks. I think it depends on getting the right brand for you - they seem to have new kinds quite often.

I find it useful to give myself time off from them and I tend to wear them mainly for exercise or if going out on the town . If I read with them in they dry out because I don't blink enough!

Strange about the protein build up though.

I no longer can wear contacts, too much stigmatism and soft ones just don't work with me. I did notice though, when I was wearing them, that I would have a lot of build up. Usually build up though can be due to allergies as well.

Re: Question for Contact Lens Wearers

Hi Everyone, I am new to the board and returning to Atkins after not doing it for 5 years. Disease related. Anyways, I have had glasses since 7, contacts since 15. The soft tend to promote more protien build up if you produce a lot of protien. I am also one of those special people that would build up non removable protien lumps on gas perms till you had to toss them. The main cause I've found was allergies. I find that the following:Alcon Opti-Free Supra Clens Daily Protein Remover

Really does the trick on helping to remove it, I use it on regular & disposables. On regular contacts I would use daily or every other day, on the disposable I would use once a week. Also if anyone knows a generic let me know. I don't feel it has to do with Atkins, I had the problem before and after I stopped. i've also noticed sometimes one eye gets more protien than the other, how odd.I do find the drops above work better than the regular cleaner because it sits overnight eating off the protien. J

              Just my 2 cents.
              Cheers!
