  • Drinking plenty of water but why is my body still holding on to it?

I'm waking up puffy & sore which is usually due to water weight. I am drinking loads of water, usually well over 128oz, yet I'm waking up with water weight.
It's been this way also during the last of induction, which ended on Monday, yet I'm still retaining water. And I'm not budging an inch on the scales, or in the tape measure either.

The philly steak I've been eating, usually 2 pieces, only has like 35g of sodium. And usually drinking all this water flushes out all the salt. And I'm not eating a lot of processed salted food.

Any clue why my body is refusing to let go of all this fluid?
And TOM just left last week, so it's not near that visit.

      Laurenfra,

This is driving me nuts. Usually when I'm on Atkins fluid build up just doesn't usually exist. I'm waking up several times a night to go to the bathroom, but still wakingup feeling like the Stay Puff Marshmallow man. lol.

I retain water from sugar. Salt is not a problem for me.

Last week I was so happy got down to 141.2 then went out to eat and had onions, and the next day the scale was up to 142. Then that night due to my husbands whinning and complaining about having to eat plain meat and veggies I fixed chilli with hamburger meat, can tomatoes, can rotel, salt, pepper & chilli powder...the next mornign I was up to 143.

I checked the canned tomatoes and rotel and I that was 7 grams of sugar...I knew that was it and watched my veggies and it finally went down a little.

Yesterday I was back to 141.2 but today it is 141.6 so not sure what I ate that my body did not like.

Good Luck figureing it out. Every time I think I have this weight loss thing figured out I gain a little.

Thanks for the heads up. Never thought that sugar could make us retain water.
I'll have to look into that one.

I thought that was the whole reasoning behind Atkins, we are controlling the sugars, so if taking in sugar would cause a water weight gain.

Actually, yep, controlling the blood sugar spike is the reason behind Atkins, but I've never heard of sugar causing anyone to retain water. That's a new one to me.

In DANDR(in nutritional supplements section he recommends(for fluid retention) 50 to 100mg of pyridoxal, plus 1,500 to 3,000mg taurine daily. Asparagus pills are also effective.

One night I drank over a gallon of water and I drank most of it the couple hours before bed...UGH the next am I was waterlogged, and was certainly holding on to all that water. My body just couldn't get rid of it as fast as I put it in. I would have been better off drinking LESS water. Perhaps you're drinking too much water in a short period of time, or too close to bedtime? Just a thought...?

                      Thanks.
I had thought about it in passing, but then thought..."nawww...that couldn't be it because I'm not eating much salt"

I'm not drinking a lot at bedtime because if I do I'm up. I try to drink the biggest portion during the day.

In a little experiment I ate something wheat yesterday, a no-no, I know but seems I may have a wheat allergy and this reaction only proves I may be right. Or probably celiac spru because I had a slight cramping action too. Not much, but a little. I got a case of Montazuma's revenge about 1/2 hour afterwards. Which got rid of a good portion of that built up water. What a relief it was to get rid of that puffy feeling. Anyways, back on track today and I know to stay totally away from wheat.

Looks like I may have to get back on those fluid pills my Dr. prescribed for me.

Too LITTLE salt can also cause you to retain water. Your body tries to balance potassium and sodium and you lose both when you drink a lot of water and do low carb, which doesn't require your body to hold on to water weight. If you are low on sodium, your body will hang on to water to preserve the amount you do have. Unless you are salt sensitive, then you are probably not getting enough since you are not eating the sodium-loaded processed foods now. I don't like the taste of salt, so I have to make a conscious effort to use some every day on the foods that I can stand to sprinkle a little on, like eggs, cucumbers and tomatoes. I have my blood tested every 90 days and have low blood sodium as often as I have low potassium. You especially need a little iodized salt for thyroid function, if you don't live very near salt water.
