  • Atkins blamed yet again in the media, read on.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16474800/

This article was on msnbc this morning. It blames low folate levels in women on diets such as Atkins.

Just one more example of people not following Atkins correctly and then blaming the diet for poor health.

How ridiculous. Gee, I never knew that the only place I could get my folate was from white bread.

Yes, blame all those on Atkins, go right ahead. And while you're at it, blame diabetics and celiacs. Blame health nuts, and certainly some vegans, because I'm sure they're not eating wonderbread, either.

Don't dark leafy greens have folate? But why would we want farmers to make money? Let's force Americans to spend money on GOVERNMENT projects.

first of all, every pregnant woman or woman who is trying to conceive (myself included) knows that extra B complex with folic acid is a necessity. women who are not pregnant or not TTC and have low folate levels at current means nothing in terms of pregnancy or risk of birth defects. i mean, come on, if you get pregnant, you take the prenatal vits and extra folic acid. having a slight deficieny now will not have any impact once you become pregnant and start supplementing.

this is article is crap, really.

We all know everything on the news is right now don't we?

I went grocery shopping with my husband yesterday..it has been ages since I have been in a large grocery store AGES!!!

well you know there are four maybe five crapfood isles????? the chips isle, the cookies and crackers isle and the "breakfast" isle, the bread isle and the florescent colored drink isle!!!!. ...every one of them is loaded with crapfood ..white flour...sugar.....chemicals....colors...wild kids climbing out of the carts begging for junk and very little in the way of whole grains to choose from ....

I am sure some of that crap in those isles are spray painted with folate!!!

mean while we had the produce department to ourselves ...

eating is so bad in the US..sure let's just focus on a those who did not eat a wide variety of fresh foods or take prenatal vits during pregnancy k????

I used to teach prenatal classes ...you know how many women brought Cokes, chips, candy into the class instead of bottled water and a piece of fruit or cheese or some veggies???? By the time the classes were over maybe half were eating better ....and that was with a lot of work on my part trust me!!!!

Low folate???? Folate is found in vegetables. If you do Atkins properly, you eat more servings of vegetables per day than what that silly Food Pyramid recommends.

You know at my house we don't let our kids call someone stupid. But I think an exception is in order.

The white bread is "fortified" with folic acid. Maybe we could "fortify" something a little more healthy than white bread. And then shame on the whole grain bread because it does not have as much folate.

And haven't we been told that supplements don't really work. We have to get our vitamins in our food.

I get it - how about putting all the nutrition I need in a Snickers bar. And then shame on any one that is not eating 4 Snickers bars a day.

That evil Dr. Atkins suggesting that people eat green vegetables where that folic acid can be found naturally.

                        STUPID.

I'll be willing to bet my life savings that the same company that produces wonderbread and cheerios funded that study. Crap.

I always find this stuff ridiculous... it's just like how people are always telling me that I'm going to develop osteoporosis by 30 because I don't drink milk and therefore "don't get enough calcium." Riiiiiiight... meanwhile, they're oblivious to all of the spinach and yogurt I eat.

I've begun to realize that people purport to know a lot more about nutrition than they've actually taken the time to unbiasedly research. Many of these foods have been marketed as "be all, end all" healthy foods (i.e. skim milk, orange juice, and fortified white bread) to the point where people don't know anything else. I mean... why are people who cannot name me 3 good food sources of calcium (I find most people stumble after saying "milk") lecturing me on how I don't get any nutrients? And when I'M the one taking supplements.....

Oh well, now I'm all red in the face. I just can't stand this stuff in any form -- all this amateur nutrition coaching and these fluffy articles that mislay blame.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.
