  • Atkins Shakes and Bars on Induction???

I am starting Atkins tomorrow and was wondering if the shakes and bars are allowed on the induction phase?

    hi and welcome!

great choice to start atkins! while technically, they are allowed on induction (at least according to the labels on them), it is advisable to steer clear unless you're in some kind of pickle where you have nothing else to eat. folks here have indicated that eating them tends to stall weight loss. go for the real foods on the induciton list to ramp up your metabolism and stem your craving for sweets.

    good luck!

Do yourself a HUGE favor and "just say no".

Eat nothing that's not on the Induction Allowed Foods List. Absolutely nothing.

You don't need that chemical filled, artificial, expensive junk food anyway.

      Renee is right.

However - I think it's really important to note that Dr. Atkins indicated that those types of things were okay for "emergency use" and were *NOT* to be used often. I think it's also important to note that the people making the labels for that low-carb junk food are also the ones pocketing your hard earned cash.

As our good buddy 2big would say - "There's no such thing as a mythical magical carb that doesn't count."

Dr. Atkins *never* meant for his plan to be a low-carb version of Slim Fast -and we all know how well Slim Fast works for the long haul. LOL

Is this hard to stick to? Do you really lose cravings for carbs?

            Tara-

The short answers to your questions:

Is this hard to stick to? Depends on you and how bad you want it.

Do you really lose cravings for carbs? Yes.

This is going to require work and dedication on your part. For me, it was tough to stick to for the first few days. Carb withdrawal (Induction flu) was not fun- but it was worth it! I felt like crap for the first couple of days and then BAM..I felt fantastic. Lots of energy and I started to feel healthier. Then all of a sudden I felt like I was in control of the food instead of the food being in control of me.

To me deprivation is not being able to eat real ranch dressing or mayo, or having to eat horrible and fake tasting cheese. To me deprivation was having to give up butter and garlic sauteed mushrooms on a nice cut of steak. I don't have to give up those things on Atkins.

There are *so* many alternatives to the junk and garbage we've been feeding our bodies for so lon that got us into this mess in the first place. There really are! Being deprived is a choice born of pure laziness on this WOE. The resources to eat well are readily available (recipe section and database, not to mention the bajillion other low-carb recipe sites on the net).

When you stop eating all the junk and stop trying to feed your cravings (bars for sweets cravings. Feeding a craving doesn't kill it, it just perpetuates it!), you'll discover some things I bet you don't know right now! For example- I'll bet you didn't know that steamed broccoli actually has a slightly sweet flavor. I know I was floored to learn that and now broccoli is one of my favorite PMS comfort foods. LOL

You CAN do it and it's worth it! Just look at all the successful long-timers around here. We're here to tell you it's doable

            I wish you success!

              Great post Brook

Tara - when/if you find yourself craving sweet things eat a highfat snack instead. It will fill you up and let your sugar monster know who is in charge
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
