  • Only lose when eating lean meats?

Hi.. I'm kinda doing an version of atkins where I only eat lean meats beacuse it seems that no matter what I do..I can't lose unless I'm eating Chicken, Turkey, Tuna and stuff like that. Does anyone else have that problem? Also, does anyone have trouble with adding too many veggies to their diet, do you feel that slows you down? I really enjoy fried cabbage with mushrooms but wonder if this is part of my problem.. eating too much of it might kick me out of ketosis? I currently lost 93 pounds but am having trouble getting the ball rolling again.. I have 68 more to go. Also, one more thing.. Does anyone know if sunflower oil is considered to be a "good oil"? I have a local dollar store that sells EVOO/Sunflower oil for only a buck. I couldn't believe it because usually EVOO is super expensive so I was happy to pick some up, but the sunflower part has me wondering. Sorry for all the questions, would love to hear any adivce anyone has on these topics. This is such an awesome place.. glad I found it. Thanks again.

I don't actually know if sunflower oil is the best, but I do know some fat burning bills have sunflower oil as their main component... Extra Virgin is always the best choice anyway.

Now, I don't think eating only lean meat is good. Too many protein isn't the goal here. This may work for you, but since we are talking about atkins woe, you should at least add some other fats to your menu then. You should get 65% of your calories from fats and only 30% from proteins. And I personally know someone who stops loosing after eating too much lean meat, like chicken more than twice a week etc.

      Here, I found this:

Sunflower oil is a healthy choice for your cooking oil needs. High in vitamin E, it has a light clean taste. There are three types available.

Linoleic sunflower oil found on grocery store shelves today is high in polyunsaturates or linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid. It is an excellent home cooking oil and salad oil with a light, clean taste, high smoke point and low level of saturated fat.

High oleic sunflower oil is premium sunflower oil with monounsaturated levels of 80% and above. It is used in food and industrial applications where high monounsaturated levels are required.

NuSun is a mid-oleic sunflower oil new to the market. Developed by standard hybrid procedures, it has a monounsaturated level (oleic) of between 55-75% with an average of about 60-65%. Saturated fat levels of 8-9% are 20% lower than linoleic sunflower oil. The balance of its composition is linoleic acid. Initial frying tests reveal NuSun works very well in commercial frying applications. It requires no hydrogenation thus eliminating the concern of trans fatty acids. The 25% linoleic presence adds the benefit of pleasing taste.

Thanks so much for the input.. what about cheese. Do you limit your cheese intake? I usually eat like 1 - 2 slices of FF cheese per day..but they are like 2-3 carbs each. I wonder if that's only because they are FF or does all cheese have carbs? Just wondering what's the best choice if any at all. Thanks again, sorry for all the questions!

Dr. Atkins says that trying to do a Low fat(fat free) version of his plan DOES NOT WORK. I hope when you say FF cheese you mean FULL FAT, not FAT FREE.

Re: Only lose when eating lean meats?

Hi Joy, You have beautiful progress pics.. wow. You look great! Yeah, I am eating the fat free.. I tried to do it the other way but just could not get that darn scale to budge and even gained weight if I didn't watch my intake. I even ended up in the ER to get my gallbaldder out and the dr about choked me when I told him I was doing Atkins. (Which is FRUSTRATING because 1/2 the dr's say low carb is great, others hate it) I've been doing more lean meats because he warned me about damage to my pancreas? and switched to fat free cheese and have been doing a lot better.. but sticking to this WOE is kinda tough. Even though it is working for me, it's still tough! I have 68 pounds to go and it just seems like things are getting harder and harder, especially to stay focused. Looking for some new ideas on how to keep going in the right direction. I have 4 kids and 1 with Cerebral Palsey that I need to be healthy for and take care of.. that's part of my motivation to get fit. But like I said, it's been going on 9 months of working on this and I have such a long way to go yet.. kinda am in a rut with how to spruce things up a bit to get the ball rolling again.

Re: Only lose when eating lean meats?

I find it ie easier to stick to eating fullfat foods as they are more satisfying than fatfree ones. BTW 'fatfree' often = 'added sugar', hence the higher carb counts of your cheeses.
I echo Heidi's suggestion of you listing a few days worth of your food intake in the 'Review my menu' forum. Include quantities and any oils/butter you use to cook with and then some of the more experienced Atkineers here can help you maybe 'tweak' things.
You havent listed any info like your height, gender, current/goal weight either, which will assist people to get a feel of what might be right for you.
Most people add this info to their signature block so it appears automatically. To do this click on the 'User CP' link then on 'Edit signature' and add the info then 'save'.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Have you ever tried to do it exactly like the book says? I mean two weeks induction, only 3 cups veggies, 2 of them salad veggies, no caffeine, no sodas, limited amount sweetener, at least 8 cups of water, exercising? Umm what did I forget? I you haven't, I would give it a try. If you have, how did it work for you?

Thanks everyone for your tips.. I'm going to look around and see if I can gather some more information. This is my first day here.. so kinda new. I'll do the menu thing like suggested. I basically eat the same types of things all the time so this will be pretty simple. I appreciate all your help and input. You certainly are a friendly bunch here! =0)
