  • Having trouble cleaning out my closet!

I am cleaning out my closet today and getting rid of clothes. I am having a little bit of trouble though....I feel myself hesitating about tossing out my bigger sizes. Though I haven't lost much, I know that I have no plans of wearing the size 22/24 winter clothes I currently have next winter, so why am I having a hard time tossing them? My intentions are to be wearing half that size and fitting into a 12 or 14 by next winter. I also never want to go back to "frumpy" clothes again, so I should want to get rid of all this immediately right!!??

So what gives? I am wondering how many others have had trouble with cleaning out there closet and letting go?

Like Nike says, just do it. I did and it gives you a brick wall you have to deal with should you slide and gain some back (again like I did). I now only have two pairs of pants, and they are dress pants that I was going to have tailored (well I do have some jeans that fit). But I knew that if I gained past a certain point I'd have to buy clothes and I absolutely refuse to rebuy stuff I gave away. "Get rid of the fat clothes" was the absolute best advice I ever got on this board.

I'm sorting them out into bags right now and will be dropping them off to the Goodwill tomorrow morning! It's a bit uncomfortable to do, but I will do it! What is the point of keeping them around. You would throw out cigarettes and bottles of liquor if you were trying to beat those habits. I would suspect the same goes for "fat clothes". Keeping them only gives me permission to wear them again one day.........why would I want to do that!

I went through the same thing you're going through. It was hard for me to let my "fat" clothes go because ultimately I was afraid I'd need them again. Getting rid of those clothes was the best thing I could have done. It's been over a year that I've been into this WOL. When I tossed out those clothes it was like making a promise to myself that I would never need to go there again. Congrats!

OMG! I was just in my closet Friday night thinking the same thing. Needless to say I have a 28 gallon garbage bag full of clothes that I am going to try and yard sale. What I don't sell, I am going to drop off at our Christian Service Center (kinda like Goodwill).

Re: Having trouble cleaning out my closet!

I've considered selling them to a consignment store in my town. I contacted the owner about a year ago to get rid of last season clothes, but they weren't taking anymore clothes at the time. I figure I can get a little money from the old clothes to buy new ones in smaller sizes. Its a bit of work though, so I may just drop them off to the Goodwill and say "GOOD RIDDANCE"!

Ya know, being the size I am I would always search on ebay for my clothes because I was too embarassed to go into stores. My suggestion is put them on ebay, take the money you make off them and buy yourself something nice as a treat for your success.

Re: Having trouble cleaning out my closet!

I don't think I have clothes worth selling on ebay. My larger clothes are frumpy. Now my smaller clothes........those are very chic, well made and a mojority of them I paid a lot for. Smaller clothes always seem to look better.....better cut, better color, better EVERYTHING.
I'll probably give them to Goodwill......the quicker they are out of here, the easier it will be.

Re: Having trouble cleaning out my closet!

                      How exciting for you!!

I think I know how you feel, disposing of clothing works the same on either end I think. I hesitated to get rid of my clothing and go to bigger sizes when I was gaining weight because I felt like if I could squeeze myself into it, I was still that size. LOL, it took me many years and many bad pictures to learn the motto "Just because you can fit it, don't mean it fits you." LOL

Now that I am on the way down, and finding my the larger clothing (that I finally gave in and bought) fitting a lot looser, I feel hesitant to go back down in sizes. I think partially because I'm worried that this will end up another failure, and then I'll be stuck with nothing but a potato sack to wear around, having ridded my big girl clothes.

                      Can't win for losin!

Easier said than done I'm sure, but girl go for it! You are doing a great thing for yourself and you will never be looking back, no need to keep those big clothes now!
(Except maybe for that impressive AFTER pic, where you fit both legs into one leghole! hehehe)
                      Congrats on taking this step!

Definately get rid! I get rid of clothes about every 2 months because we are always getting charity donation bags through the door. Yesterday i was planning to wear a favourite skirt but when I tried it, it was massive, so I did another resort and got rid of a few more things. What a great feeling!

Is worth keeping one large pair of trousers though for photos like Ahlia said

Yep, they would be a license and safety net in case you backslide, I did the same thing. I took them and gave them to my sister, who was heavier then me but went on atkins. She was losing weight really nicely, and was starting to fit into the clothes I was now too small for. So I got to save her some money and gave her my larger stuff. Now she is starting to get too small for them! /glee

Totally dump the old clothes. There's nothing like cleaning out your closet and seeing all that free space for new clothes as you get smaller! As I migrate from one size to another, I donate the size I just left (in my case, 16 was the last size). It is easier to have fewer clothes, than to have clothes that you can slide back into!

Good luck -- and remember to keep your donation receipts for tax write-offs!
