uhmmm.. wow, this is old.. ok, well, the one link (from the American Dietetic Association) doesn't give information to support his claim, not even close. The link from ABC News is outdated, and the one from AHA is classifying Atkins as a high protein diet...

      I loved the pipe too.

I think that the article needs to be put under the thread with "A WHATEVER moment".

I completely agree with what Brook said....also I believe the so called heart disease risk has been completely demolished by recent studies..in fact heart disease continues to rise amongst the low fat high carb eaters much to the astonishment of researchers!

The first thing I noticed was who he provides links too...the first being the Heart Association. They have a huge vested interest in maintaining the status quo. I am not American, but I imagine that If their advice was ever proven misleading the law suits would be horrendous!

I have been thinking that all such articles only serve one purpose: he gets his name published somewhere. For some people, they're ready to whatever to get that. maybe he got promoted now or something LOL We shouldn't really pay attention.

BUT! What's more irritating to me, it's when someone is writing a book about nutrition, dieting etc. And maybe he's even got a point in there. But he can't go straight to the point. NO! he has to spend pages on dispraising other diets or approaches! Go get it! If you think you are good enough to say something about nutrition, go ahead, SAY IT. In a book or whereever. But if you don't think you have something to say, you start cudgel someone/something been successful before. That's what is absolutely terrible IMO.

Re: Any thoughts on the Justin Leonard article?

I love articles like that one because it displays one of my favorite things...the distortion of statistical information. It *sounds* like a dry subject but when you illustrate it properly it can be hilarious. Here's one for you:

"By following a low fat diet you are more than 3 times as likely to be struck by lightning then someone on a low carb plan."

The fact that this is just due to the amount of people in existence versus the number of lightning strikes becomes lost in the "shock value" of the statement. That's what these types of articles bank on...

It's so obvious when you say it...yet, we don't see it so easily when reading it. As you say... the "shock value" distracts from what that statistic is based on.

Hold on. We drink a lot more water than most normal people. Wouldn't that put us at a higher risk of getting struck by lightning?

I wanna kick that Justin guy in the face.
