  • Vitamins and flu

I have been on atkins for a week now, but haven't been taking any vitamins. I'm hoping to get some today, but what do i get? Do i just get Multi-vitamins?
Also, could someone please tell me the symptoms of induction flu?
Do you get a sore throat with it?
    thanks x

    Re: Vitamins and flu

A "senior" multivitamin like Centrum Silver or the equivalent is a good option for a multivitamin. I don't believe that a sore throat is due to induction flu. Make sure to drink lots of water and if your sore throat lingers, probably best to have it checked out. It's that time of year, ya know! Hope you feel better soon!

Never heard anyone get induction flu with a sore throat. Sounds like you've got a touch of the old regular flu. Hope you feel better soon!

Re the supplements... I'd get a good general multivitamin that doesn't have iron in it.

I don't know if this is part of what i have or because of induction. But as well as my sore throat, i feel dizzy, had pains in my neck, seen blotches out my eyes and my arms and legs feel really heavy and stiff, i have big problems walking around a lot, especially going up stairs.

That sounds like the real flu to me. I've had slight light headedness from induction but everything else sounds like you have a bug of some sort, most likely a virus. Which is doctor speak for "I don't know what you have" LOL

Hope you feel better soon. Lots of fluids help.

              Re: Vitamins and flu

Funny you should ask this - I just read this checklist about how to tell if you have a cold or the flu and according to it the flu is only SOMETIMES accompanied by stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat. The primary indicators of actual flu are fever of 100 or higher, headache, aches and pains, weakness, chest discomfort and cough. I really hope you are feeling better soon!

What have you eaten these past 5 days? I HAVE had sudden sore throats develop in my dieting past that were directly attributable to eating virtually nothing except meat. They would very painful very fast and also caused intense pain in the mouth on eating something acid like tuna.

                    Re: Vitamins and flu

I don't know what the sandwich filler things are, but I can tell you that you are'nt eating nearly enough. You aren't supposed to starve yourself on Atkins. Look at the Induction forum stickies for how-to's if you have'nt got the book; read the book. Not only are you getting yourself into a general state of nutrient deficiency, if you also concurrently do have an infection, it will be harder on you without the vitamins and minerals you need.

The first few days of induction also causes a major change in your body's metabolism which can cause you to lose excessive amounts of water and electrolytes, which can also give you symptoms to deal with, or induction flu. These need to be replaced! Drink LOTS of water, and supplement your nutrients, and be sure to eat no less than once every 6 hours. Utilise some of the 3 allowed cups of veggies with each meal along with some protein and fat.

                    Hope you feel better soon!

Yes...don't fall into the trap of heading towards starvation mode. You stop losing there. Eat more, and eat your veggies!

i don't mean to not eat much, i think i've always been like that. I'm not a big eater. I'm not specifically trying to eat less, i've been in trouble with the hospital about this before. When i look at what you're meant to eat on induction i don't think i could manage it all. I just eat as much as i can.
