  • Painful leg & foot cramps - help!

Can anyone offer some suggestion to reduce severity of leg & foot cramps - mainly in the night.
These are excruciating & I would like to do with out them if possible.
Have been on induction for 3 days now.

Got to stop fighting with myself & find peace!

Lisa, I also had these during induction. I took a magnesium pill and a potassium pill along with a multi-vitamin, and it really helped.

I used to love getting those cramps. I got them when I woke up and stretched. It was kinda funny. (No I'm not a glutton for pain, as I prefer psychological pain...)

The reason I loved those, is because I knew I was on the right track. But to get them to stop, all I needed was a good multi. Heck, you probably don't need a really good multi. Just a multi.

          Drink more water.

Seriously. Cramps are a symptom of dehydration. The reason they are in the night (or usually the wee morning hours) is because if you are dehydrated before going to bed, you become MORE dehydrated during the night and the muscles cramp.

          Drink up.

another thing that you can try is diet tonic water... the quinine in the tonic water helps prevent muscle cramping...

Re: Painful leg & foot cramps - help!

I was having a slight cramping problem and my doctor also told me to take potassium and magnesium. There are lots of foods that contain both so you might try uping your take of legal foods that contain high amounts of those and see if it helps.

Below are links to two websites with food lists showing amounts of potassium and magnesium. I don't know where you are at in Atkins but if you can have nuts you should a take close look at that section, most nuts have a large amount of both and a multitude of other things that are great for you.

As Validrouge said, dehydration may also be a factor, might as well up your water intake as well as that is also helpful for so many things.

AND Dr. A recommends chewing on parsley to help with the dragon breath from ketosis! YAY for parsley.
