  • Question from a cheater.

Well, I have been on this for just over 3 weeks and am down a little over 20 lbs. I have no desire to mess things up but Friday night I will be drinking beer. I know my carbs are going to be a lot higher than 25 for the day. Now I rarely drink, but for this event it's a must for me.

So... What will the effect be on my diet, on my body and on ketosis. I assume I do not need to do induction over or anything. Any advice would be great.

Coach, just keep in mind that when you consume alcohol, your body switches to burning only alcohol for fuel until the alcohol is gone. You'll go back to burning fat for fuel when the alcohol is all burned up. I'd be very careful about the foods you eat in conjunction with your alcohol consumption. Make sure they are all appropriate for your diet and then the very next day make sure that you get right back to plan.

Try drinking a light beer or one of the low carb versions like Michelob Ultra. They taste a little watered down but not bad.

it's free beer so it's pretty much what they hand me.

Well, depending on what kind of beer and how much you drink, you could very easily throw yourself out of ketosis - and not just until the alcohol burns off.

Remember also that while we don't count calories, calories absolutely count. You can drink 1000-2500 calories in a good night and not bat an eye doing so. I know I can depending on how long I'm at it. Those additional calories WILL store if you don't burn them off. The additional carbs from whatever you're drinking will toss you out of ketosis. - You may well have to reinduct for a few days to get it back.

Add to that that while no one ever plans to eat stuff they shouldn't before they go partying, the truth is that the alcohols impairs judgement and loosens our resolve on Ohhhh so many things. LOL I've done quite a few things that seemed like a GREAT idea while I'm ..<ahem> impaired</ahem>...that I never planned to do or would never do sober. Eating is among the least of those. LOL That said, plan ahead. Eat before you go and make sure you have something with you or available to you for when you do get hungry.

Remember also that the scale may be kind to you the morning after. Don't get too excited by that. Alcohol is dehydrating. The aftermath may not be visible for 2-3 days afterwards so far as the scale is concerned.

            Above all else, be safe.

it all depends on what you want from this ..free or not .if you are dedicated to loosing wt and trying to find a way to live forever then you need to hold off...just my opinion..but if you are going for the beer anyway....then let someone else drive because ketosis and booze you will get buzzed really fast!

I was going to mention as Heidi did that alcohol and ketosis are an interesting mix...so be careful!

I find that a good workout the next day can help get you back into ketosis, though it can be very hard to force yourself to do it the day after, it's worth it.

also try drinking water between your drinks/beer. I find this helps me not drink as much, and not become as dehydrated.

Well I have a good friend who is an artist and he is using my leg to try to win a contest at a convention this weekend, I am going to have to sit for 5 strait hours. I think it's going to be neccessary. I don't mind the excercise in the morning or the induction stuff again, I just want to zone out a bit not to the point where I am sloppy drunk or anything. Brook, sounds like you are a bit of a wild one...

If you can do some dancing while you are drinking, you'll burn some of those extra carbs away. But try to use Lite beer, unde 5g carbs ea, & keep tally- so you know what you are dealing with. Your CCLL if you know it is below which you should consume lest you throw yourself out of ketosis.

                      Re: Question from a cheater.

I'd be for finding some valium to zone out before I drank beer...but that is just how commited I am to this. I am a hard liner but there is no way, especially 3 weeks into this, that I would have been tempted to drink beer! It is way to risky in my opinion....just for many reasons...you can get blitzed a lot more quickly with ketosis in place, it lowers you resistance to off plan foods, cannot tell you how many people have been drinking thinking they would stay true to plan and before the night was over they have eaten everything in sight including ice cream, bread etc.

Well it worked out. I went to the convention, had fun and yes had a few and managed not to cheat other than the drinks. From Friday night (right back in to Atkins mode) to Monday moring I actually lost 0.2 lbs which is amazing considering I did no excercise the entire weekend. Also when on Atkins you have zero tolerance...ZERO! I was never a big drinkiner, just when I go out with the coaches or my exwife and I used to go out with friends, so I never had a big tolerance anyways. But Friday night I had one glass of beer and could really feel it. But enough of that, I am back on track now and heading for my goal.
