  • Anyone Not Loosing But Gaining???

Ok, been doing atkins for 1 yr, never cheated, stick with the program 100% of the time. Work out 4-5 week and drink plenty of water. I have only lost 17lbs in 12 months, and not gained any muscle (do cardio, not weight lifting), my body fat has not decreased.I keep trying and I loose and gain the same 5lbs over and over. Can someone tell me what the **** is going on?I have listed my menus over and over, and done everything I was told to do, but still nothing changes.I am getting so mad, because I need to get this weight off (I am still 200lbs) and feel like I am just wasting my time.
Is there anyone here who has gone thru this?IT IS TOTALLY FRUSTRATING.

Have you had your thyroid checked or otherwise discussed this with your doctor?

Re: Anyone Not Loosing But Gaining???

Hi - when you say you gain and lose the same 5 pounds - is there anything in your eating patterns that you can match up with the loss and/or the gain? Sometimes when we see a loss on the scale, we subconciously grant ourselves permission to "treat" ourselves - even legal - but carb creep can set in.

How do you feel physically? Do you feel like you did at the beginning when you lost the 17 pounds? If not, there could be something there that you're not seeing. And if it has been years since you had your thyroid checked, it might be worth another look. I have to hand it to you, you have more persistence than I - I don't think I would have made it a year without seeing results.

One other possibility - I know that we don't "count calories" but calories "do count" is there ANY chance that you are just overeating your legal foods? Did you move right into OWL? What is your current daily carb intake?

I am trying to think of everything...but it's hard to know all the details of someone else's situation. I tried to check out your fitday from another post, but can't access it.

I really hope you can figure this out and work through it!

I use fitday everyday to make sure I stay within a certain caloric intake (around 2000cal).I stay within my carbs and usually work it out to be almost exactly 65 fat, 5 carb and 30 protein. Like I said, I work out 5 days a week and drink 5 bottles of water every day. I even cut out diet colas.I have no idea whats going on here but I can tell you that , the persistance you mentioned, is about to disappear.

Are you still following an induction menu after a year? If so, you need to move to OWL ASAP.

Re: Anyone Not Loosing But Gaining???

You add 5 net grams of carbs to whatever your current count is - if you are at 20 this would put you at 25 - if you are only averaging 15 - then this would put you at 20. What does fitday say your BMR is? I would consider dropping my calories to just above that number for a week as well, just to see what happens.

I like cauliflower, broccoli, pumpkin, zuchinni, squashes....anything from the 1 cup list would be great in a 5 net carb serving size.

Re: Anyone Not Loosing But Gaining???

Atkins is more than just induction--induction lasts 2 weeks, though many choose to extend this. It's recommended that induction only be safely extended for 6 months. After induction, move to OWL. OWL is a series of rungs, each a different food type or group, introduced in order of low to high GI.

Check out the stickies in the OWL forum, and read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 edition) as soon as you can. Many people have the misconception that staying on an induction menu will speed weight loss, when really it's moving to OWL that speeds most people's losses.

I have and read Dandr, but was infront of the computer.
Ok, so I average 20-25 carbs, so I should up it to 30carbs. See in the summer I tried this with berries and nuts, and it did nothing, I think I probably gained a few lbs than.I dont know whether my body has just had it, I know I have, but I am still willing to give it another week. What should I do, if by next Monday (of course listening to all the info and following it to the letter) if I still gain or not loose?Any suggestions????

Re: Anyone Not Loosing But Gaining???

I'd be really interested to see a couple days worth of menus from you. I'd also suggest getting yourself back in to see the doctor. A lot can change over the course of a couple (or few) years.

I can't lose anything at 2000 calories a day - even at 200-ish pounds. 1500-1800 calories a day is more than reasonable. If you move to OWL as suggested (and a suggestion I agree with), you can have more veggies every day, but I really think your overall intake is high, especially if you're having this much trouble.

At around 170-175lbs I found myself in a 14 week long stall. I was working out regularly, my eating was on point, I was taking my supplements and it wouldn't budge no matter what I did. I was beyond frustrated. I was pouring over my fitday journal and it hit me upside my head like a brick- I didn't need to eat the same amount of food at 170lbs that I did at 180, 190, or 200lbs. Just because my carb intake was the same didn't mean my body required the same amount of food. <shrug>

Again, I'd be interested to see what you're eating every day and how much of what.

If you're working out, you're gaining muscle - albeit smaller amounts than if you were weight training. I would, however, suggest you incorporate some strength training into your routines as well, and I'd suggest you switch up your workout routine (which you should be doing every 6-8 weeks anyway- our bodies acclimate way too darn fast to what we're doing!). Contrary to popular belief, women do not have the hormonal makeup to "bulk" muscle with weight training. In order to bulk, you'd have to want to do that and there are specific things you'd have to do to make that happen. It's not easy and it doesn't happen by accident! Increased muscle mass not only looks hot (tone!!!!), but burns more calories at a resting rate. It's definitely worth incorporating into what you're doing now

Hi Diva from your post in review my menu at the end of January http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=40354, it appeared that you were eating alot of processed foods (deli meats, sausage) and not enough vegetables.

Are you sure you are eating until you are satisfied and not full? You're menu appeared to have an awful lot of food in it and your protein seemed very high. Perhaps if you move to owl as suggested above, the added veggies and variety of foods would help this.

My fitday journal was 2 weeks ago, and I changed all that. I took the advise and lost the processed food (however the only ingredients in the sauasage was pork, salt and pepper, nothing processed, it was fresh from the butcher), added xtra water and starting lowering my calories.I actually gained this week back upto 203.5, so you can see how frustrating this has all become.
I am giving it another week (already gave it a year, so whats another week), and if nothing happens, I am switching to a low carb, low fat version to shake things up.
