  • For my sake, I'm hoping this is just paranoia...

Alright, so I'm in the living room, and I get this sudden urge to do some sit ups. Well, crunches, whatever. As I'm doing them, I get to around 7-8 and I feel this weird >pop< in my back. I don't really want to say snap, but for all I know, something may have snapped. It was in the vicinity of my left shoulderblade, inside area.

Now, whenever I turn my head to the left, I get this sharp pain in the area of the pop. For a while, I had this weird sensation in my left arm, but I'm writing that off as paranoia, because the sensation is almost completely gone now.

I have all feeling in my legs and feet, I just have that weird pain in the area of my shoulder blade, and this undying urge to look to my left. (You always want to do something when you know you shouldn't) It doesn't hurt a lot, but it is very, very annoying.

I'm fairly sure I didn't break anything, as it doesn't hurt, and I took a tylenol to kill any soreness, but what should I do? Should I be safe and get myself checked up? Because I don't have insurance.

Stupid crunches... From now on, I cross my arms on my chest, as opposed to supporting my head.

higgies always told me to cross my arms over my chest. i guess he was saving me from what is going on with you.

you've done what i would have done with the tylenol. i might have found myself in a hot tub.

if you support your head with your arms, you're not supposed to be moving them at all, the common error is to try and "help" your upper body up by pulling with arms instead of just using abdominal muscles...

I would say it's probably a strain of some sort, to take an OTC, soak in epsom salts, drink a ton of water and wait at least a day to see if it lets up... Then again, I'm not a doctor.

Yeah, I'd wait to see if it's still bothering you in a couple days. If it is, definitely go get it checked out. I've strained my neck/back similarly before and sometimes turning my head all the way to one side will really bother me for a few days. Take it easy over the next couple days and see how ya feel.

Thanks for the info guys. My arm is feeling fine now, and I can actually turn my head to the left again. My back is still a little tender in the area of injury, but I think everything is gonna be fine.

I'll give myself til the end of the weekend to heal up. I think I just got paranoid, because that snap kinda felt like a bread stick snap. But I'm fairly sure a bone wouldn't do that with a little pressure to the neck. At least, not sit up pressure. And I'm sure a broken rib would hurt much, much more.

You could have just popped your spine a bit, like cracking a knuckle. If it is pressing on a nerve you may feel tingling in your arm, like pins and needles. I had a car accident a few years back and my back pops all the time when I exert myself a bit too much, maybe seeing a chiropractor would be cheeper than a dr's appt? Then again I'm Canadian and have no idea how health care in the US works.

after almost 5 months on Atkins and over 63 lbs down! Watch for updates!

A lot of chiropractors these days won't accept new patients without doing x-rays first to ensure that there's nothing out of place that they can't accidentally trigger and cause a deeper issue to surface for fear of being sued... x-rays are pretty expensive from what I remember...

It sounds like you may have poped a rib out, I have one in that area that goes out all the time, It hurts like **** but my chiropractor puts it back puts it back painlessly and im back to normal by the end of the day. Choose a chiropractor by talking to friends an see who they recomend. I nice advertisment dosent mean there a nice Dr.

                  Just my 2 cents

                  Good Luck

Well, it's been a bit over a day, and I think I'm feeling pretty normal. No pain in my back, full range of motion in my neck, full function of both my arms, but at the same time, I haven't really tried doing anything too strenuous.

If everything is fine, then I resume exercises monday.

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

In case you ever need it, a good massage therapist can be very worthwhile. Check around for referrals and pricing. I know most are expensive, but our local favorite that my husband and kids have gone to is $40/hr for adults and just $25/hour for students.

If you're going to a massage therapist though, you should make sure that they are a member of the AMTA, and are a Certified Massage Therapist, and the school that they received their certification from was longer than like, 6 weeks. Massage therapists who have not been properly trained (or have no training), can seriously injure people and break bones (yes, I know of 2 *real* instances where people have had ribs broken).
