Does anyone else suffer from chronic kidney stones? I get 1 or 2 a year, always on my right side...until this last one. It was on the left side and was 6mm and stuck. I have had a lot of people tell me it is because of Atkins but I disagree, at least in my case, because I have been getting them for the past 23 years.

Re: Kidney Stones
I remember hearing about one of my friends getting a kidney stone. He was, I wanna say 19-20 when he had it. So I got worried and did a little research so I wouldn't have to go through what he went through, and I learned that one type of kidney stone is just calcium deposits that gather at the bottom of the kidneys. It takes a while for the calcium to build up enough to cause any problems, and if you keep the kidneys filled with liquid so the calcium never has a chance to settle to the bottom, then the stone can never really form, as it never has a chance to settle at the bottom. So, you could try drinking more fluids, in case your kidney stones are of that sort.
I read that drinking water is optimal, because it flushes out your system more frequently than other fluids, but if you prefer to drink something else, you can, because the idea is keeping your kidneys full. But I recommend water, so you can get rid of any calcium deposits you may currently have.

Re: Kidney Stones
Here's some info on kidney stones.

Since you've had them in the past, you should know what kind of stone you get. According to the links above, the most common stone is a calcium one.
If you're stone former and they are bothering you now, I suggest you see your doctor.

Re: Kidney Stones
I had kidney stones the last time I did Atkins about 8 years ago. Coincidence or cause-and-effect, I don't know. But mine were calcium oxalate, the most common kind. The key is to minimize foods high in oxalates, such as spinach and dark leafy greens - the very veggies I ate the most of while on Atkins. My doc said anytime I did eat spinach, etc, make sure to drink a glass of water immediately before and another glass immediately after in order to ward off danger. I had to undergo two courses of lithotripsy to break them up and have a stent. It still took a whole month to pass all of them. Needless to say, I watch very carefully which veggies I eat and make darn sure I drink my water and then some.
Good luck!
