  • Up the fiber

I have a question, I found this awesome bread Natures Own Double fiber bread, its 10 grams of carbs minus 5 grams of fiber, making it 5 carbs per slice.

Yesterday I splerged, I had two slices for breakfast with eggs, and then for lunch I had three slices with tuna and mayo for lunch. (that is more fiber then I am used to). I hardly drank any water, (i drank alot of diet coke, which is something I don't usually do).

When I got on my scale this a.m. I was up 2-3 pounds. I was mad, really mad, because I didn't feel Like I had really screwed up, I maybe had 45 grams of carbs, maybe not enought to loose, but sure not gain.

I read this a.m. that when you consume alot of fiber, it can cause temporary water gain, is this true. And since I drank alot of diet coke on top ot it made it worse. I don't usually consume this much fiber or drink that much diet coke, and I usually drink 5-6 bottles of water a day. And I thought it was good to up your fiber.

I'm drinking alot more water today, so I'm hoping my scale goes back down tomorrow, does anyone have any opinion on this.

    Re: Up the fiber

I take it you're on maintenance? I would say that if it's a new food, I wouldn't be eating 5 slices in one day, that when you eat a lot of fiber you're supposed to drink a lot of water to keep yourself "regular", and that soda contains a lot of sodium which makes people retain water (I retain water if I have more than 1can in a day, but this could just be since I don't eat much salt). I would say that I would be drinking more water today to try and flush out my system.

It takes 3500 calories to gain a pound. I doubt you ate that much yesterday. It's just water weight. Don't worry about it.

It is normal to vary in weight several pounds from day to day. Yes, this is variation in water, also in how much your bowels have stored in them, especially if you are constipated. Your skin, I am told, can even absorb a pound or two of water while bathing, then will gradually dry out.

The Atkins diet is supposed to be low-stress diet, so do not get all panicky on day to day variations. The Atkins is supposed to be for life (a double meaning there) so don't stress out for one day or one week; look for the long-term.
