  • Anxiety Re. negativity

I swear, I'm having an anxiety attack. I've been communicating with some women on a local meet up board and a thread about Atkins came up. I've been doing my best to advocate and clear up misconceptions. Every time I read something negative I get so upset. Adrenaline, rapid breathing, chills.. I'm trying not to get nasty, I like these ladies and I don't want to burn any bridges. I don't know why I'm reacting this way. It's kinda scary! It's like I need a valium. LOL

    A couple of things...

    1. Where are they getting their information about Atkins?
    2. Have they read the book and other materials about low carb diets?

Of course not. They are nurses - one a dialysis nurse. The dialysis nurse says she's 'held the hand of people who have to have dialysis for life because they did the Atkins diet'... Then I get jumped on for calling them on spreading lies and misinformation and they ask ME for studies and clinical information! Are they providing it for their side? No. Just anecdotal stuff.

Don't put yourself through that aggrevation. They just want to argue with you. I don't think you can reason with them or make them see the light.

I'd ignore them. If they don't bother to read/educate themselves about the diet, then their opinion is rather baseless.

If they want "studies" then refer them to the New England Journal of Medicine, June 2004 (I think) there were 2 studies specificially about the Atkins diet.

As for the people needing dialysis due to "Atkins"----I wonder if they really did follow Atkins or if they followed "Atkins".

I know. I know I can't change their minds. I need to come up with a list of quick replies that I can put out there for these occasions. Part of the problem today is that I haven't seen this level of misinformation and ignorance in a while. I've been doing Induction this time for two months now (low-carb for 7+ years off and on) and this is the first serious negative discussion I've had about it.

I understand your frustration. The fact is that Atkins has a bad rap due to people who never read the diet and by people who do "Atkins", then blame the diet for their "Atkins" results.

After I say this, I'll quit. But I disagree. You do not need a quick list of responses, because they're not going to listen to you anyway. You would just be wasting your energy on them. Not worth it in my opinion. There are much better things you can do with your time....like, hang out here and chat with people who share your views of this WOE.

That was my exact thought. I pointed that out to them. How can you, in this world, say it was Atkins that did it? I honestly don't see how healthy people can get so unhealthy that they need dialysis doing Atkins! OMG, it's SO healthy!! I've never eaten this healthfully..

My response is to people who are negative about Atkins is; I feel better than I ever have. My skin is better, my hair is thicker and healthier, I have much more energy than I used to and my mind is clearer. I also don't eat any processed foods and I eat a lot of vegetables. So tell me, what is it exactly that is so unhealthy about my lifestyle?

Yep, if they say anything, just say...well it is working for me...and leave it at that. They have their minds made up, and nothing you say will change their minds.

Think about it this way...why does it matter what they think? I know it works, I have over 50 lbs of fat missing off my carcass to prove it. Just smile, nod, and feel happy in that you found a way that works, that doesn't cause you to wallow in misery. In the end, you are the only one that matters, others have to make their own decisions and reap the concequences of those actions.

Here's some *hugs* for you, don't stress out.

I wish I could give you a hug! It sounds like it really ruined your day!

Sometimes we just have to agree to disagree with our friends. And your continued success and healthyness will be the very best point you can ever make, if they're smart enough to see it.

                        Good luck!

It didn't ruin my day, really. I'm highly manic right now and I think that's where the over-reaction came from. I'm done nursing I think (16 month old!) and I ordered some Kava Kava and St. John's Wort. Man do I need to regulate now that I'm not self-medicating with food (i.e. sugar)..

Thanks so much to everyone who replied to my post.
