  • Weighing is hurting...

    Hi
I promised myself I would only weigh myself every Thursday. I didn't do it AGAIN!!! Last week I weighed myself just a couple days after, and had lost a little over 3 pounds wich brought me to 302.6 now today (an actual week after weighing 306.0) I am down too 304.4. So I don't know if to count that as a loss or a gain If I am going weekly I lost a little over a pound this week. But if I am counting in the WEEK SNEAK AT THE SCALE I am up. Does that make sense??? I think I am going to make Michael hide the scale from me and only give it to me on Thursdays. So I feel a little bad, a little down. I feel so stuck in these 300's (a 20 year relationship with 300lbs *sigh*). I think I mostly feel down. I have been so, so good with this WOE. I don't know. I just needed someone to talk to about it I guess. I know I am very good, and expert even at sabotaging myself. I know there is a challenge to not weigh yourself. I am going to look into it when I get home from work. I get panic just thinking about not weighing myself That's crazy!!! I also need to get a tape measure. I haven't been able to measure, and I really think I have lost some inches. Blah, I'm rambling. I'm sorry. I just don't have anyone else that understands what I am going through but all of you. So here I am As always, thank you for listening to my ramblings. I hope you all have a wonderfilled day
    Peace ^_^V

Nicole we understand what you're going through. Lighten up on yourself. Just think, in a month you'll be thinking back to when it was cool to break the 300 mark. You will. I guarantee it. Keep pushing forward, and never look back! The board is here for you!

I have to weigh myself daily. I get in trouble by not weighing. I have a "If I don't see the scale go up then it doesn't" attitude. It keeps me in check. The highest weight I ever was, resulted after not weighing myself for a year. Everyone is different though, so do what works for you. If weighing yourself all the time causes you to be down, or to cheat then don't do it.

        Good morning Oh2,

These fluctuations are normal. I'm sure everybody has them. I think you are much better off looking at your weight loss on a month to month basis. I have been recording my weight on the first of each month. Then when I get down in the dumps about any fluctuations, or if I think I'm not losing, I look at the calendar and know it is all in my head. It is hard to be patient, but I think that is something that many of us have to learn.
I can look back at the previous month and see that I am losing weight, and Atkins is working. Frequent weighing is a hard habit to break, but if you let it affect you mentally, it is probably best to have your friend hide the scale.

          Re: Weighing is hurting...

Like the others have said, weight fluctuates hourly and daily, depending on how much physical activity we've had, how much we've eaten, if we're dehydrated or filled to the brim with water, and because of hormonal fluctuations. For me, it's best to weigh only once a week. And I think for most it's best to weigh only once a week (that's what Dr. A recommends.) If you hadn't snuck a peek, you'd be celebrating your loss, not wondering why it's slightly higher than the last time you checked.

Here's a question: When and how are you weighing? You should weigh in the morning after you've gone to the bathroom, without a stitch of clothing on. This will be closest to your "true" weight.

We've all been the victim of scale fluctuations! I suggest you go out and buy a tape measure ASAP because I am willing to bet you're losing inches. Often, it's the tape measure (and our clothing) that tells the TRUE story of our successes, not the scale.

            Hi Nicole
You are finding out why lots of us advise not to weigh more than once a week, so those normal fluctuations during the weeks don't get a chance to freak us out

Congratulations on your losses so far Keep up the good work
I am looking forward to reading your 'Yippee' post when you cross the border into Twoterville!!

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Hey Nicole, I found out that if I just weigh about once a month its not as stressful. For me the important thing is that its coming off and thats all that matters. You might just be pleasantly surprised if you could hold out for a whole month!!!!

                    Re: Weighing is hurting...

If you don't go to the bathroom like you used to that can have a temporary effect on the scales.

Don't fret the fluctuations... they are completely normal. Think "direction" not "speed", and look at the overall picture after a few weeks.

Hang in there... you can do this!

                      Re: Weighing is hurting...

Awww, thanks everybody!!! I am thinking about weighing monthly, but I think that may make me crazy. Sneaking looks on the scale makes me crazy too, and I can't seem to stop myself. To be completely honest, I don't think a challenge could stop me from weighing myself. I feel because I have so much to lose that I should be losing a lot more. I think it's my own fault. I think I have gotten lazy with my carb intake. To much guestimating with how much carbs I'm eating. Not enout *real* measuring. I also think I am going to be one of the ones that can only eat a small amout of carbs a day...20 at most. Maybe I should do induction again??? Blah, I woke up feeling depressed, and discouraged today I've been crying since I woke up. I have been trying so hard. Today is just a bad day for me I think (all the tears are a good sign), and I just woke up. On a happier note, I just took my sugar levels and it said 124!!! Now that may still be a little high for just waking up and not eating BUT my sugar levels (on meds) were ALWAYS in the mid to upper 200's when I woke. I haven't taking meds since I started Atkins, so the 124 is with no diabetes meds When I started this WOE my diabetes was the main reason. The meds haven't helped me, and I didn't want to get on insulin. They are still a little on the high side, but they have NEVER been so good...not even on meds. I go to the Dr. in two weeks to see what they think, and if I can keep trying this without the meds which is my hope.
So did I mention I jumped on the scale this morning and it said I was up a pounds? Is today Thusday my weigh in day??? NO!!! I think I do it to ruin my day on purpose. I think somewhere inside of me I am setting myself up (do you know what I mean?). I just looked at my fingers while I am typing and I think I am retaining water =-O Maybe that's why!!! I am making Michael take the battery out of the scale today, because it is obvious I have no self control. I feel like a two year old. Maybe I should start a journal here so I can whine over there...lol. I have a Journal on "extrapounds.com" but maybe I should have one here too. Well, thanks again for listening to my ramblings. My goal today is to drink a gallon of water I hope eveyone has a wonderful weekend, and thanks again SO MUCH for your constant support and understanding

                        Re: Weighing is hurting...

Nicole, congrats on the sugar levels! This WOL is doing wonders for you. You are becoming healthier, and the weight loss is just an added bonus! Do what you need to do to break the slavery of the scale. Hide it, break it, use it as a bookshelf, put a gallon of water on it.

I wouldn't go back to induction, I would just measure veggies, cheese, etc. very carefully. It's always a good idea to know exactly how much you're eating. Do you use fitday? I use it religiously and I know I would not be nearly as successful if I didn't use it. But I'm a nerd and I like numbers and hard evidence.

I think starting a journal is a GREAT idea! Journals are so fun, and you get TONS of visitors stopping in, saying hi, offering advice and giving out congratulations!

                            Nicole,
Hey there, You are to be proud of yourself. You decided that You will Loose weight. That is the First Step in a life-time of living. Do each day at a time and before you know it you will 280, 250, 200, 150.. and wowsers, a babe.... (sorry, that is a guy in me expressing myself). But really, you can do it. We here in Atkins have done it. A whole bunch of us are in the 50, 80, 100+ club... (not me yet but soon) but you will be in the 200+ club someday. Dream about it and just work Atkins Day in and day out. You will feel like a whole new person and your friends will tell you that you look wonderfull and your "so-called" friend with just smirk. Now that is the BEST revenge to think of... watching them smirk on how much weight you lost.

But, weight loss is a job but it can be done easily. More easily on Atkins than on zone or even the other 1,000 other calorie-counter diets out there. Just work the induction phase as much as you can. 2-weeks, 2-months, or the whole time you are on Atkins. If you go off it for a day or two, just get right back on and start it again. Just don't beat yourself up for it. That punishment does not help anyone. Just keep thinking positive and take a look at yourself in the mirror from time to time and just think of all your "so-called" friends when you start fitting into dress sizes that make them jealous. Haha...
Good luck Nicole You have a lot of good friends here at Atkins,
