  • Is my fat turning into muscle?

    Hi everyone,

I joined ADBB in January and officially started this WOE on 7th February. I lost 6 pounds during induction – had one cheat with lentils, and restarted. Yesterday I went up to Rung 1 of OWL and have added the 5g extra vegetables. After the first week of induction I stalled and eventually stopped weighing as noticed my clothes were getting looser.

Today is now the beginning of my 6th week and I have regained the 6 pounds. I was quite teary and upset but then I got out the tape measure and I have lost a total of 10 inches! 5” off my hips, 2” off waist, 2” off chest, ½ off upper arms and ½ off thighs!

I am really pleased with the inch loss but just wondered if anyone had a similar experience and eventually lost the pounds. I am very metabolically resistant as I have hormonal issues (surgical menopause - I rapidly went from a UK size 12 to a size 18. I have been this weight since then with no fluctuation.

I have never eaten a lot of simple carbs, didn’t have a sweet tooth, didn’t like pizza or fast foods, wasn’t into low fat diets, and am finding this WOE easy and enjoyable. To be honest, this is my first proper diet but it isn’t that much different from how I used to eat and I’m wondering if this is why the scale isn’t budging. I have not cheated since the lentils, do my Fitday log daily, as well as the Journal Stats forum several days per week. I’ve even checked my BMR and adjusted my calorie intake.

My theory is that because I’ve started exercising at least 5 times per week (I never exercised except for simple yoga before Atkins), my fat is turning into muscle causing me to weigh more? Don’t know if I’m being silly or if this makes sense? Also, I think I retain a lot of water and have now reduced my sodium intake.

I’m doing everything to not let it get to me. Please, if anyone can shed some light I would really appreciate it. As I’ve said, I’m happy about the loss of inches but would also like to get to a healthy weight. My 44th birthday is March 22nd and my mini goal was 195 lbs (just under 14 stone) …. what’s a girl to do????

Thanks for the support and encouragement. This is a long post so thanks for making it through to the end - any feedback will be appreciated.

Fat never turns into muscle. The two are totally different and one can never become the other.

What is happening, I would bet, is that your muscles are retaining some water due to the new exercise program. Stick with it and the water will soon go!!

Congrats on losing the inches; the tape measure is your best indicator of progress!

Thanks TT Driver. It was a silly question ....now that I've re-read it. I think I actually meant because my muscles are developing they are carrying more weight. Anyway, thanks for explaining. I won't give up and I'll let you all know when the scale finally moves but I won't weigh myself for another few weeks.

      Take good care,
      Hannah

Hannah, I think you're gaining muscle. Congrats on the exercise! What's more important than a number on a scale is your BODY FAT PERCENTAGE. The more lean mass you have, the better! Make sure you're drinking lots of water! After a tough workout, I usually gain a pound or two, as muscles need water to make repairs. If you drink lots of water each day, you won't retain as much or for as long.

I love muscle! I have been working on my abbs, I can feel them under my skin/fat layer. Now if only I could see them! :P That's going to be my next goal, lower body fat percentage.

That is awesome about the inch loss, and really, that's the most important thing. Nobody but you guys know what my scale weight is, but people do see lost inches!

Re: Is my fat turning into muscle?

Hannah, it wasn't a dumb question at all. In fact, alot of people believe that "muscle weighs more than fat" which is a myth. A pound of muscle weighs 16 oz and a pound of fat weighs 16 oz. The diffference is, a pound of muscle is MORE DENSE, therefore it takes up less space (i.e. you lose inches) and look smaller as you become more muscular. Its a win-win !!

Keep up the great work and don't obsess about the scale. They've been known to LIE.

Re: Is my fat turning into muscle?

Wow! Thanks for the feedback Julie, Maerow and Betty! Julie, I’ll do as you suggest and up my water intake. Maerow that is sooo true! So many people have been commenting on my weight loss even though the scale hasn’t budged. The inch loss is definitely more noticeable. Betty thanks for explaining – that certainly makes more sense … how on earth could fat turn into muscle? I was one of those who thought muscle weighed more than fat.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I will update you on my progress. It must be hormonal but I feel very moved by the support we get here. Please don’t underestimate the impact this makes on whether we (the newbies) hang in there or not.

Have a great day and a good weekend too. Hugs from Hannah.

Re: Is my fat turning into muscle?

Congratulations on losing those inches, Hannah
Many people on these boards report that though they might not have reached the low weight they were hoping for they are now wearing smaller clothes sizes than they were previously at the same weight, so getting rid of fat and adding muscle is a proven effect of following the Atkins WOE.
One of our UK moderators, RichT reported only this week (post titled 'Me me me') about how even though he had put on half a stone in the last year he has lost several percentages of body fat - which after all is what we are all after - losing FAT!!

No-one else sees those pesky scale numbers but everyone sees the slimmer, trimmer you
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Is my fat turning into muscle?

Thanks Elizellen! And greetings from Cardiff. I'm going to read RichT's post now, and you are right - it's all about losing the fat... I'm definitely going to stick with this WOE. Your pictures are remarkable by the way. If ever I feel discouraged all I'll need to do is check out the 'before and after' photos and I'll be back on track.

                  Have a good weekend.

Re: Is my fat turning into muscle?

Sorry for the late response RichT - I've been away for a week and have only just returned. I read your post and it made a lot of sense - I am definitely losing inches and am no longer preoccupied with the scale. I've also increased my exercise from 30 mins to 45 mins daily (my goal is to do 1 hour at least 5 times a week).

Your photos are amazing - you should be very proud. Thanks so much for sharing.

                      With kind regards,
