  • stevia question

Hi everyone, quick question, i bought the stevia packets to put in my coffee and i dont like them, just wondering if the liquid gives off a different taste, i have used splenda and really love it but was trying to get something more natural to use.

    Re: stevia question

I use stevia, and I've used splenda. I definitely prefer stevia for it's natural properties, but it took some getting used to. (Just like changing from sugar to splenda - any change like that takes some adjustment of expectations)
If you use too much it can taste like licorice. Maybe try buying one of the bottles w/ the little scoop in it.

I find the liquid and the powder taste the same. Stevia is much different taste than any other sweetener. As Mellissa mentioned it does take some getting used to.

      I thought i wouldn't get used to the taste either..but I did.

I've always used the liquid stuff, and I actually like the taste! I've never detected that anise aftertaste that others talk about, but I don't use too much at one time. I certainly agree that it mixes better with some things than others. I find stevia mixes really well with fruits and certain veggies (I put it in "fruit dip", cottage cheese, whipped cream for berries, and pumpkin), though I haven't tried it in coffee.

If you happen to have a Trader Joes nearby they sell Stevia in a shaker container. It is powdered and it works and tastes fine if you like Stevia. Its more cost efficient than individual packets and tends to last a lot longer. I have never seen Stevia packaged this way anywhere else, but I would assume it would have to be out there somewhere besides Trader Joes.

I started useing the liquid Stevia a few days ago. I bought the Stevita brand. It really does not seem that sweet. We had to use about eight or so drops to sweeten our little cream cheese snack we have every blue moon. I think the sweet leaf packets are a little sweeter.

I was just about to ask a Stevia question
I bought the packets for the first time tonight, and just noticed it is Stevia PLUS (plus fiber), not sure if that makes a difference. I'm going back to look for the liquid tomorrow. It was one of the things on my list, and when I was in line to leave it was at the front so I grabbed a box. I'm going to try it tonight in the coffee I shouldn't be drinking O_O

I bought the same "Plus" tonight and just too a look at the box. The fiber is an "insulin fiber" what ever that is and each packet (i bought the individual packets) are 1g carb per packet.

I used one in coffee tonight and actually liked the flavor and Im glad not to have to use any of the "other: sweetners any longer because the more I read about them the more I think they really arent good for you.

Check that again - I think you mean 'inulin' and it's a natural vegetable source fiber.

                        Hi Scooter
It's with the vitamines. In the diet section of my health food store. I couldn't find it in the baking or sugar section. Hope that helps sweetie

                          Re: stevia question

Scooter, stevia is not allowed to be called a 'sweetener' due to fda regulations (and health canada ones too), i believe the reasoning is political - there's alot of stuff on the web on it. I notice because of this, it's never in the grocery store with the sweeteners, but usually in the organics section, or the pharmacy int he diabetic section (at walmart it is here anyway).

That can make it a little hard to find unless you know where to look

for any gardeners: Last year I planted stevia in my garden and it grew really well. i took the leaves and boiled them down in water, and it made a liquid version. there are recipes on the web for it. Only downfall is the liquid is green.
