  • White Radish

White radish is my latest discovery - it's tasty and crunchy and almost all fibre, though it does have some useful vitamins and minerals. It's a very large root, so you get a lot of bulk to eat.

    Anyone else eat it?

What do you do with it?

    Re: White Radish

I do (whenever I can find them here.) I chop it into cubes and put them into soup or stews, like you would potatoes. They also are good in those brothy Asian style soups and in stir-fries (I slice them into match-stick sized pieces). They're alittle too watery to substitute for potatoes in scalloped potatoes or mashed potatoes, but they make a decent potato pancake: shred the daikon, salt it and let it drain away the excess moisture.

There's also a Chinese dim sum dish called "turnip cake" (no turnips, but it uses daikon.) I have to figure out a way to make it because it uses flour (I guess you could substitute oat flour or a nut flour). Anyhow, it's a savory dish and it's either cooked plain or it has chopped Chinese sausage mixed into it.

I love Daikon radish in miso soup with butternut squash, onions and wakame.

I also like it sliced thin and served with soy sauce, wasabi, and sesame oil.

      Yum yum.

Carrot shaped, upto 12 inches or more long and 3 inches diameter.

Sold as "Bavarian Radish" here in Germany.

I tried to make oven potato chips out of it... please note the "tried". Then again, I can really burn pretty much anything that doesn't come with instructions on exact times/temperatures...

Yummy julienned in a salad ... I have also heard that it has powers similar to those attributed to horseradish -ie .it helps you to lose weight ! Not sure if that is true though.

Celeriac is terrific! you can fry it like french fries, fry it like potato chips, or use it like you would in any potato recipe. It's also good julienned and made into a cole-slaw like salad.
