  • No... you're NOT doing Atkins correctly

Ok.. maybe I'm just really grumpy today....

But it really annoys me when people say things like "I do eat (insert non-Atkins friendly food here)...but other than that I'm doing induction 100% by the book".... or how about "I can't give up my (insert non-Atkins friendly item again) but I'm following the rules exactly".

    You AREN'T following the plan.

    Ok... carry on.

Re: No... you're NOT doing Atkins correctly

I had a friend that did Atkins with her daughter after seeing my weight loss. Apparently wine, peanut butter and lots of Atkins bars on what they considered induction food. She said Atkins 'didn't work' for her. I said she didn't do Atkins and she really just ignored that.

I see others with the "cheat-free" awards and give them a lot of credit for it. That's one I'll NEVER win. Yesterday was a case in point; I wasn't prepared, on the road and STARVING. Grabbed one burrito from Taco Johns. There's some mixed emotions with that; kicking myself for buying it but also proud of myself for not going all out with pop, potatoes and everything else.

GOT to have more ready to go with me on the road!

            Dream, awesome post.

When people make up their own "rules" to Atkins, I call it Fatkins. Fatkins=Fake Atkins. My boyfriend and I have lots of jokes about people, when we see them shopping or eating, and they have a pound of bacon and a dozen eggs for breakfast, or take the bun off their sandwich and eat the fries, we say, "Oh, he/she must be doing Fatkins."

Re: No... you're NOT doing Atkins correctly

I am guilty of this. Specifically when it comes to coffee. I'm still a cup a day man. Congrats on doing it right. Maybe what comes easy to you some people struggle hard to find. Ultimately Dr. Atkins was talking about customizing a diet for the individual. There are such unfortunates who might never be able to grasp the concepts that seem to come so simple to many here. I mean if common sense and following rules were so easy, I wouldn't be obese and I wouldn't be needing "Atkins".

I know I'm a slow learner, but I'll get it.

Nice "tough love" approach. Very thought provoking. Don't think I'll be laughing at people much though when I hit my goal. Hitting close to 3 bills is a pretty humbling experience.

Good luck to all on FatKins, hopefully it will lead us to Atkins road, or better health.

                  WaronTypeII-

You know, there's a big difference between having a cup of caffeinated coffee once a day and eating french fries while claiming to be on Atkins. I don't consider what you're doing necessarily bad or against the grain of the low-carb lifestyle.

I whole-heartedly agree that each has to make some minor adjusting to make it a WOL that is sustainable. Most diets fail because they are just not practical ways to keep eating for the rest of one's life. This one is, and you know, if you need to have a coffee, have a coffee. It's not stalling you or killing you or even messing with your ketone strips.

The one thing I have found, however, is that you cannot admit too much of that stuff on MB's and such. The Atkins police are out there, you know!

Re: No... you're NOT doing Atkins correctly

                    Julirama,
I am exactly what you call a Fatkins...

This is the first time I ever tried this diet, and prior to it, I was making what I thought were healthy choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unfortunately I had to have that 1 snickers bar or 3 muskateers right about 1pm every day. Then on the way home from work, if it were a nice day, i'd grab an Mcflurry with Oreo's, or a Blizzard from Dairy Queen, or maybe a ice cream sandwich from 7-11...

Well, I decided it was time for a change and decided on March 29th, I'd give up my horrible eating habits and give Atkins a whirl...

So I have followed it as close as I can, but instead of the 1pm candy bar date I had with the vending machine, I put a couple russell stovers sugar free candies in my lunch instead. When I get the urge, I take a bite and save the rest for later. Then, instead of hitting up Mickie D's, or Dairy Queen on the way home, I take a bite of the candy again...

I'm trying to ween myself off the cravings, but I am happy I have supplemented a bazillion calories for a few. As I keep losing weight, I plan to stop eating the candy all together.

In the 6 days since i've started, i've lost 9.5 lbs. I'm happy to this point, and I am making much better choices, even though its not 100% by the book.

To me,I am proud of my accomplishments to this point, and while I may not of quit the chocolate/sweets habit 100%, and not followed "Atkins" 100%...I have cut away at my old bad habits tremendously..

I'm going to reach my goal...i'm more determined more than ever!!

Again, I love this place for the support and advice!

Peace and love to you all, may you all reach your goals...were not in a race to lose weight the fastest..we're in a race to feel better about ourselves...if we reach our goals, we are all winners!

The atkins police may come and get me but I really don't see a huge problem your having a very small amount of the SF candy if it helps you stay on atkins otherwise. I get mad at the people who say they are on atkins and then tell others it doesn't work while they are eating a whole can of cashews and a jar of peanut butter and they have only been doing it a week or so! That is not induction food mister!

I can understand an occasional cup of coffee. But the ones who are saying they are doing induction and telling how they eat nuts and low carb bread and low carb this and low carb that? They might be eating low carb, but they aren't eating on the Atkins plan.

I'll put my hands up and say that I am sorry for being a member of the Atkins police. All I try and do is pay it forward, following my success on plan. Bearing in mind that I stuck to the diet by the letter for all of my weight loss.

And it's people like you, Rich... the ones who are doing it by the letter... those are the people that are successful. And that's what I intend to do too.

Re: No... you're NOT doing Atkins correctly

No need to apologize for following directions and telling people how you do it.

I am weak, I will stumble and fall no matter how hard I try. But I'm going to keep coming back and keep trying no matter who it annoys or who snickers and laughs in the shadows. My life depends on it. That's my story.

                              Progress, progress, progress. Move forward.

                              I try to remember:

                              Stay humble
                              Stay teachable
                              Stay open to change
                              Stay grateful

"There's no such things as staying the same, you are either striving to make yourself better or slothfully allowing yourself to get worse"

Like the first week here, I got informed by "the police" that the franken bars were bad. I stopped eating them and my entire .... I cannot express how much has changed. Every other time I tried Atkins and ate those bars, I ..... continued to eat those bars .... stalled and said "Screw it". This time around, I listened to people who knew ........ the "police" as it were. And it's changed things so much, it's unreal. And I'm grateful for that.

So when I do get to my goal and have some sustained success on this diet, my hope is that I beat those that need it over the head with the DANDR and those that need a little more tender approach, I hope I provide that to them.

But I've a long road to go.

I think everyone here wishes everyone well in their hearts and remembers what it's like being obese. That's what is so cool about this place.
