    Grrrr

According to the BMI calculator at mayoclinic.org

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bmi-calculator/NU00597

I'm still obese after losing 80 pounds. 254 at 6'2" means I have a BMI of 32.6, and 30 is obese. Kind of a bummer.

In order to get to 30 BMI I will have to lose another 20 pounds, after that I fall into the overweight catagory. Guess I'll make that my mini goal.

Seems kind of weird to aspire to being overweight

      Re: Obese

This is what I have heard about the BMI scale.

All of the figures were worked out about 50 years ago when many people were mal-nourished. And basically the charts have just not been updated since.

      (thats what I heard btw).

        Re: Obese

Wow, I'm actually considered overweight!! Yay!!! I'm so used to having it appear as "obese" that I stopped doing it a while ago... I only have like, 2.4 points to "normal"!!! Ok, so this *is* after over 120lbs...

I like that link!! But umm.. it's kinda odd that it doesn't ask whether you're a boy or a girl to calculate it, don't you think??

          Re: Obese

And another annoying / frustrating / stupid thing about BMI scales and calculators is that it doesnt take into account muscle! Muscle weighs more than fat, yet isnt fat!

See if you can get your body fat % measured instead, thats far more reliable.

Yeah, my BF is in like, amazing shape, and that link says that he's about .5 away from being overweight since he's so muscular.

                  Re: Obese

I did some measurement thing online one time and that was the result. It was what got my butt in gear, I kept thinking I could get it down to just "obese" and at least I wouldn't be killing myself, I would just be really fat.

                      Re: Obese

Wow, that's actually one of the more favorable BMI charts I've seen, probably because it doesn't ask for gender. I'm glad to be simply "overweight" rather than obese, that's a relief! But my "goal" weight is still considered overweight. I'm not holding my breath on my BMI ever being normal/average. I'll invest in a body fat test instead.

                        Re: Obese

i've always known that a BMI over 30 is considered "obese". mayo clinic defines "morbidly obese" as those with BMI over 40.

you know, it's also an ugly word, isn't it?

My motto is: Don't let stupid numbers get you down! I started out morbidly obsese and after losing 100 pounds, I was then just overweight. Now, I am still overweight....3 more pounds and I'll be in the normal range....but I have 25 more pounds to meet goal. Don't worry about the charts...it will drive you crazy. Use it as a 'guide' but don't get too depressed over it. As long as you are losing inches and weight, and feeling good....
