    Re: Atkins is Healthy

Quite apart from what we're allowed to eat or not (and taking our sugar, refined flours and highly processed foods doesn't seem too bad a thing to me!!!), surely we should look at the balance of those foods.

I'd say that we're encouraged to eat a wide variety of healthy foods... plenty of vegetables too. I've been maintaining now for more than a year and a half and I can't say I eat more meat (or protein) than I ever used to in my pre-Atkins days. I do eat more veggies though, and I've always been a big veggie eater. I think I do Atkins pretty well correctly...

Where's the problem? It's the balance of what we can eat that makes this way of life healthy.

      Re: Atkins is Healthy

And it goes back to a question I posed a couple of threads ago... How much protein are you truly eating? Although the US-RDA recommends 0.8 g/kg daily, the WHO (which would influence the eating of our board members outside the US) recommends 1.0 g/kg daily. For a 165 lb woman, thats 75g of protein a day. For a 200 lb man, that's 91 g of protein a day. If a person is completing 'mild to moderate' activity (read: slight sweating, 30 mins at a time 2-3 times a week), it is recommend to increase by 5%. If a person is completing 'moderate to strenuous' (read: sweating, 45-60 minute intervals, 3-5 times a week) it is recommend to increase by 10%. Again...that's a lot of protein. I don't think many of us reach those levels... at least not on a consistent basis.

So what about fish, eggs, tofu, poutry, cheese, bacon sausage and hamburger...all the things DANDR is telling us to eat? I daresay you'd be hard pressed to find a diet that recommends eliminating these items. Vegan? Vegetarian? Maybe. Most diets - WW, Atkins, The Zone, South Beach - recognize that these types of foods should form the basis of nutritional eating. Atkins - as with the other diets - is not suggesting that you limit your diet to these foods, but consider them as choices with the other optioins.

The Atkins Diet has as it's basis a meat/vegetable formulation. Once your body/mind has adjusted to this basis, (and cut its dependency on simple sugars) building blocks are added sequentially. Atkins recognizes that each person is an individual. Foods that may trigger weight gain for me, may not be a trigger for you. That is why he recommends adding foods one group at a time. He has the rungs listed in reverse order of potential triggering (notice how high alcohol is up on the rungs.... because it has a high trigger factor). When you reach a rung that causes your body to trigger, you can say.... "You know.... maybe I shouldn't eat - or should limit - my cheese intake".

Atkins is not for everyone. There are those people who cannot/ will not accept the tenets as truths. That's okay. Conveniently, there are nearly as many types of diets as there are people. If this diet doesn't fit into your lifestyle/ thoughts/ beliefs/ medical history/ family.... you can certainly find another that might.

Many of the signs of ketosis are reduced/eliminated by adequate water intake. I have seen recommendations for up to 75% of a person's body weight in water a day. The general consensus - tho- is 2 - 3 liters - 2000cc- 3000c per day.

There is as much recent research to support Atkins, as there is outdated research to discount it. All depends on the age of your links.

CapeMay - good luck with Weight Watchers. I hope it turns out to be the diet for you. Perhaps you may like to visit http://healthdiscovery.net/disclosure.htm , which is a bulletin board that supports Weight Watchers members? I'm sure that you'll find the support on that board that you will need to be successfull!

      Good luck!

        Re: Atkins is Healthy

I agree Sally. I see it as a WOL that teaches you to eat a more balanced diet that is more natural and healthy than what we do on our own. If we could do that, we wouldn't be in the physical state we are today. I think some people just get focused on what they "can't" have and use that as a reason to quit.

I've also done Weight Watchers in the past and the point system doesn't work for me. You can still have all the junk food and fast food, you just have to account for the points. Well, if I could count on myself to be accountable for all that junk, again I wouldn't be here.

All I know is I'm eating vegetables that I would NEVER touch two months ago and I'm exercising more than I have in my whole life. 2 things that WW never did for me.

It's not for everyone, but just with ANY program, it takes time and fervent effort to succeed.

I'm sorry, but a statement like this makes me think someone is just trying to get a rise out of folks here. Anyone who truly, sincerely understands this WOE knows that you keep your protein count at 30% each day..not 100%, not 76%, not 50%...30%! The well informed person knows that they are going to have a variety of fresh veggies, fruits, dairy and whole grains to choose from once they make their way through the rungs. They also know that proper hydration and regular exercise are required. They know to consult with their MD prior to starting the program to rule out any underlying problems as well as when problems arise.

I just don't hold much merit in CapeMay's comments. I'd be curious to see what his menu was each day, how much water was drank, how much exercise was done. I'd be curious to know if he even consulted with an MD before starting the program and just what his MD had to say about his murky urine and kidney pain. You DID get that checked out, right?? Show us proof that it was indeed a medical problem caused because you were following Atkins and following it properly. From prior posts you and your fiancee seemed to totally understand the program, and yet suddenly you're acting as someone who never picked up a copy of DANDR. I just don't get that.

And if you feel every post that involves people voicing their frustrations over the misinformed, misguided people out there is about YOU personally, then stop coming back and making misinformed, misguided posts like above! Wouldn't you just rather spend your time and energy on a WW board somewhere adapting to you new lifestyle instead of bashing the old??
